Abstract
360,342. Mercury-vapour rectifiers. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, ET CIE, Baden, Switzerland. April 17, 1931, No. 11406. Convention date, April 26, 1930. [Class 39 (i).] In an ignition arrangement comprising an alternating-current magnet f which agitates the cathode mercury to bri ng it into contact with an ignition anode d, the intensity of the field through the mercury is increased by extending a pole of the magnet into the cathode vessel. A recess e for the magnet is formed in the iron cathode vessel by pressing or a separate recess is welded to the vessel. Circulation of the mercury is increased by means of a sleeve h formed of iron, quartz or a nonmagnetic material. In a modification, the magnet passes through the cathode vessel, and is separated therefrom by a nonmagnetic material. The recess or magnet is coated with a metal such as wolfram, molybdenum or tantalum, which is not affected by the arc and is wetted by mercury and its distance below the mercury level is sufficient to prevent arcing thereto. The invention is applicable to glass rectifiers, the magnet or a thin-walled sleeve surrounding it being secured to the glass by means of a fusing metal.
