Abstract

293,236. Vesin, E. Sept. 19, 1927. Exhaust-silencers.-The device which either permits of a free exhaust or serves as a silencer, comprise a pipe 1 attached by a clamp 2 to the engine exhaust pipe, a spring-loaded free-exhaust valve 7, and a silencer located below the pipe and comprising two baffle plates 3, 4 and a flattened pipe 5 with slits 6. The valve 7 is actuated by a pedal 9 and is loaded by the spring in such a manner as to keep it either fully closed or fully opened. A cable control replaces, in a modification, the pedal control in which case the spring is arranged to tend to open the valve, which is kept closed by the cable. Studs are provided on the silencer for attachment of the spring in correct position for either pedal or cable control.
