Cellulose nitrates.-The nitration of cellulose materials in sheet or layer form is effected by passing the sheet or laver on to a roll mounted above a shallow bath into which nitrating acid is fed at a rate corresponding to its rate of absorption; the roll rotates in the acid with a small radial depth of immersion and is so constructed that the acid has access to both faces of the sheet or layer. As shown, a fibrous mass of cellulose is made to pass by beaters 2 through a sieve 3, which may be reciprocated, on to a travelling band 4, a roller or rollers 5 being provided to consolidate the layer. The layer passes on to a roll 6 whereby it is carried through a shallow nitrating bath 7, the treated layer falling over the lip 8 of the bath into a displacement pan, centrifugal machine or the like, or on to a conveyer. The roll 6 may consist of a plurality of discs, which may be perforated, or a perforated or slotted drum may be used. Reference is made also to the nitration of cellulose in the form of thin paper.
