Safes and strong-rooms are provided with cavity-means which provide facilities for the visual inspection of the interior surfaces of the retaining walls and the exterior surfaces of the vault walls without allowing space which would enable an attack on such walls to be immediately commenced by a person who succeeded in obtain. ing access to the inspection passage, which in part constitutes such means. The space 12 between the walls 4 of the vault and the retaining walls 10 is of narrow width, such as about six inches, and extends from the floor of the vault 2 to the floor of an inspection passage 17 and may be sealed by plate glass 25. The passage 17 is situated above the roof 3 and provides for the visual inspection of the walls 4 and roof 3 by a patrol, its height being insufficient for a person to stand erect, the inspection being effected by a patrol seated on a small trolley. Lamps 18 are provided for the illumination of the inspected surfaces. The space 12 may contain water and also air under pressure, and a bomb-proof floor 1 is provided. The walls 4 are carried up beyond the roof 3 to form a space 6 which is filled with sand, rope, &c. not quickly removable, tie-rods 7 being also provided. The foundations comprise a layer of bituminous material 9, solid non-porous supporting pillars 13, and a reinforced base 14. The section 11 is of porous material and is connected with the space 12 so that if the seal 9 is broken by a tunnelling attack a leakage of water will occur. The lips 16 are strengthened by reinforcing bars 16<a>. The reinforcing bars employed in the construction of the vault structure may be fitted with a microphone attachment to render a tunnelling attack audible to a listener.
