Abstract
478,671. Air - raid shelters. MUIRHEAD, J. T. July 23, 1936, No. 20439. [Class 20 (i)] An air-raid shelter above ground level is formed of metal-lined reinforced concrete of arc-shape in cross - section, and the ends are closed by walls of wood protected by splinter and blast-proof curtains. An outer layer of earth 13 sloping off into the ground level on each side is used to render the building inconspicuous from the air. The concrete shell 12 is lined with corrugated metal 10 and is supported at each side by footings 11. The end walls 14 are formed of tongue-and-grooved boards with stiffeners 15 and an inside lining 17 of tar felt to prevent the entrance of lethal gases. Each end wall is provided with a door 16 having a spaced splinter screen 19 formed of woven wire-wool enclosed in mesh-work and secured to the door by bolts 21 and washers 22, the doors being also lined with tar felt. The end walls are protected by sand bass 18, and the door spaces are protected by further screens 26 formed of metal framework and wire-wool filling. Rubber tubing 25 disposed between each door and its frame ensures gastightness. Air is circulated within the building by a pump 34 which draws air through an outer tube 32 and a purifying device, an outlet 33 being provided for vitiated air. The space enclosed may be divided into several chambers and heating, light and water-storage means are also enclosed within the structure. A receptacle for contaminated clothes and the like removed from persons entering the structure may be provided, and closed by a lid 35 operated by a rope 36, a drain 38 being also provided for this receptacle.
