Abstract

520,326. Air raid shelters; bullet-proof windows. SMITH, W. H. Oct. 13, 1938, Nos. 29734/38, 34905/38 and 18731/39. .[Classes'20 (i) and 20 (iii)J A shelter for air raid protection comprises a number of curved precast concrete sections in the shape of half a "gothic." arch joined together in pairs by outwardly projecting flanges at their upper ends, the. sections being joined laterally to form a continuous structure by means of inwardly projecting flanges disposed on their side edges. The sections can be nested together for storing and transport. The sections 1 are joined together by their outwardly turned flanges 5 at their upper ends and are joined laterally by bolts 7 to form an extended structure, rubber or other resilient or gas-tight packing being used at all the joints. The flooring 10 covers a drainage channel 11 and collapsable seats 21 are provided along each side of the shelter, which is finally covered with sandbags or earth. The end closures are formed of side and upper panels 15 and 12 respectively and a door 14 with internal ribs is provided between the side panels. An air purifying device 16 is attached to one side panel and a bullet proof window 18 formed of separate sheets of splinterproof glass spaced apart by rubber packing is provided in the upper panel 12. In a modification the entrance is disposed at the side and is formed by smelting some of the curved sections at that side, erecting spaced grooved pillars 39 to receive side and end panels 44, 41 respectively, the end panels having upstanding ribs 50, 51 to receive the depending projections 52 of roof closure panels 53, 56. The grooved pillars and panels are supported at their lower ends in grooves in a cast concrete floor, and a projecting pressure rib 58 is provided over the entrance to prevent earth from falling in. A ramp or stairway 59 with wing walls 60 provides access to the shelter. An emergency exit may be provided adjacent the remote end of the shelter by using flanged curved slots of smaller height than the remainder and fitting a box frame 62 with upstanding slabs 65 and a lid 67 over the aperture thus formed. Specification 513,468 is referred to.
