Balls, shaping and surfacing; lenses, grinding and polishing.- A machine for grinding and polishing lenses consists of a lower bowl-shaped tool 6 mounted eccentrically on a rotating shaft 3, and an upper tool 15 rotatable with, and rockable relatively to a shaft 10, a ball-shaped member 17, having lenses 18 secured thereon, being placed between the tools, The movements of the member 17 caused by the movements of the tools, which rotate in opposite directions are retarded by a brake consisting of a felt facing 24 pressed up to the member by an arm 21 on a spindle 20, which carries a weighted arm 25. Weights may be applied to the shaft 10 to give the required pressure of the tools on the work.
