Driving, balancing.- A centrifugal machine 1 or a like high speed machine, is driven by an electric motor 5, and the socket or rotula 8 at the end of the motor shaft which receives the end of the machine shaft 6, is disposed inside the ball bearing 9, to prevent vibration. Where the bearing between the shaft 6 and the rotula 8 is spherical, the centre of the spherical surface is in a plane passing through the centre of the balls in the bearing 9. Where the rotula has not got a spherical surface the bearing circle between the parts 6, 8 falls in that plane as shown in Fig. 5. The cotter attached to the rotula 8 engages in the slot 11 in the shaft 6 and the slot is so shaped that there is no component across the joint tending to lift the shaft 6.
