Abstract

292,641. Newbould, M. G. R. Feb. 22, 1927. Moving stairways. - A spiral staircase comprises a series of steps coupled at inboard and outboard ends by links which are constantly in tension and spiral rails at the inboard and outboard ends of the steps which act as guides and take the load. Each link E at the inboard end is provided at one end with a slot E<2>, Fig. 9, in which slides a bearing block A<3> mounted on a pintle A<1> attached to a step, and at the other end with an aperture e through which passes the pintle of the next step. Similar links E<1> at the outboard end have slots E<3>, Fig. 8, which receive similar bearing blocks A<4> carrying the pintles A<2> attached to the other ends of the steps and apertures e<1>. The slots E<3> are slightly shorter than the slots E<2>, and the ends of each slot E<3> are equidistant from the aperture e<1> in the same link. The upper end of a slot E<2> is at the same distance from its aperture e as the ends of the slot E<3> are from the aperture e<1>, but the lower end of a slot E<2> is at a shorter distance which varies in accordance with the radius of the spiral. Rollers A<6>, A<7> at the forward end of each link E bear on the upper and lower faces of one guide rail B and rollers A<8> bear on the upper surface of the other rail.
