Materials for making coke and other products. -Light hydrocarbons are obtained from the destructive distillation of solid fuel by the use of a halogen or hydro-halogen acid either in the free state, or in the form of a compound which will dissociate under heat and act upon the fuel or upon the volatiles during low temperature distillation. The reaction is assisted by ionization due to high frequency discharges. Chlorine may be used in the form of bleaching powder or hypoehlorites of lime.
