Preparing surfaces.-A wax-like or soap-like substance has its surface made electrically conductive by treating with a gas, for example sulphuretted hydrogen, and subsequently immersing in a fluid, for example a solution of silver nitrate or stannous chloride, with which the gas reacts to produce a conducting film on the surface. A matrix may then be made by electrolytically depositing copper or nickel on the surface, and used for stamping gramophone records, or for printing surfaces. In making a gromophone record before or after cutting the sound groove, the blank is placed in a chamber which is then evacuated to the extent of 10 inches or more of mercury and the gas is admitted slowly to impregnate. the surface. This treatment takes about 20 minutes. The blank is then immersed in a 1 per cent solution of silver nitrate or of stannous chloride whereby a film of the sulphide of the metal is formed on the surface which is now ready for electrodeposition. If desired a silver mirror may be deposited on the film-coated blank, before the matrix is made, by immersing in a 2 per cent silver nitrate solution in the presence of formalin for reducing.
