Abstract

Bridges. - In suspension bridges having straight stiffening cables in addition to the carrying cables, one or more of the stiffening or carrying cables is replaced by a solid metal bar 2, 12, of round, flat, or other section, alone or combined with a metal rope cable 1. 11. The points of attachment such as 9, 10 for each vertical load-stay are in a plane containing the stay and perpendicular to that of the cables. Figs. 2 and 3 show a cable composed of a metal rope 1 and a single solid bar 2; Fig. 5 shows a cable composed of a metal rope 11 and two bars 12. The load stay is attached to the rope cable by bolted plates 5 or grooved connecting elements 15 and set-screws 18, and to the bars 2. 12 by clamping bolts 6, 16 and a filling material 7, 17. such as cement or bush-metal. The rope cables may be erected first to carry part of the construction, the bars 2, 12 being then added.
