Winding-machines.- Apparatus for laying or guiding a rope, chain, cable, thread, twine, or the like 10 on and off the drum or drums of a winch or other winding- machine comprises a ring 2 freely mounted on the drum 1, and supported obliquely to the drum by one or more rollers 4 so that lateral movement. of the ring along the drum away from the material is prevented and a rocking movement is permitted. The rollers are carried on adjustable pivotally mounted arms 5, Fig. 3, or in a frame 12, Fig. 4, adapted to rotate about a vertical axis perpendicular to the axis of the drum, the ring 2 and the rollers being preferably, in this case, formed as truncated cones whose apices meet at the point of intersection of their axes of rotation, so that rolling contact is obtained.
