Abstract

Vacuum tubes; low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus. - A gas discharge device such as a rectifier consists of a tungsten core having a surface formed of an alloy of the metal of the core with a high percentage content of thorium or uranium. The alloy may be formed by coating the core with thorium azide or hydride and heating for a short time; or a coating of thorium nitrate with a matetial such as magnesium or carbon may be applied. The filling may be a rare gas or mercury vapour at a pressure of 0.01 mm. of mercury. Specification 182,699 is referred to.
