Abstract
289,310. Wuerfel, W. Aug, 17, 1927. Rings. - An annular spring having a series of alternately reversed helical portions each a fraction of the circumference, for use particularly as a piston-ring for an internal-combustion engine, is made by distorting a plane parallel-walled ring parallel to its axis so as to form the successive reversed helical portions, and heating the distorted ring to set it. A number of cast iron rings cut from a cylinder are placed on a disc 6 having a series of internal or removable projections 12 and recessed to receive the head 10 of a bolt 9. A disc 7 with projections 13 staggered with respect to the projections 12 is then keyed on the bolt and pressure applied by a nut 11 to shape the springs 8 into the form shown in Fig. 4. The springs in their clamps are then heated by contact with a heated gas or liquid or by immersing in a liquid bath. After cooling to normal temperature, the discs are removed and the springs split at 16.
