Abstract

289,147. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., and Dreghorn, H. Jan. 20, 1927. Alternating - current commutator machines. - In a compensated induction motor, in order to obtain power factor correction for both directions of running without the necessity for moving the commutator brushes, a switch is connected between the brushes and the secondary winding. In the form shown, the brushes 6, 7, 8 of the commutator 9 of the regulating winding (which, together with the primary winding on the rotor is not shown in the Figure) are connected to the two sides A, B of a two-way switch. The blades of the switch are connected to the secondary windings 3, 4, 5 of the motor which are so designed that the requisite power factor correction is given when the brushes are displaced by 60‹, i.e. when midway between the coils 3, 4, 5. When the switch is closed at A and B respectively the proper compensations for counter-clockwise and clockwise rotations are given without the need for moving the brushes. In the general case, the angle of displacement is 360¸2N where N is the number of phases of the machine. The switch may be combined with the switch which reverses the primary leads.
