Piston valves.-Valves which control the flow of liquid to alternative water-softening containers comprise a tubular casing 82 with inlet connection 83 and outlet connections 86, 87 associated with annular spaces 84, 85, which surround portions of the tube having helical slots 92. Cup leathers 88 - . 91, or equivalent elements of flexible metal, carried by a spindle 80, form pistons which always cut off communication between the inlet and one of the outlets. A slowly-closing valve controlling the waste outlet from a water softener has an inlet 94, Fig. 6, an outlet 95, and cup leathers 96, 97, and 100. The cup leather 100 has a central non-return valve 101 and the space below is connected with the inlet 94 by a pipe 103 with regulating valver 104, a dash-pot arrangement being thus provided which allows free downward movement of the valve spindle to open the valve, but ensures that the upward movement to close the valve shall be slow.
