Low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus. - Liquid electrodes of vapour lamps &c. are composed of mercury alloyed or combined with a metal or metalloid altering the angle of contact of the mercury with the wall of the container in the cold, non-operative state to facilitate starting the lamp, the quantity of the metal or metalloid being so small that, whilst it neutralizes or reverses the convex meniscus of the mercury, it does not permanently leave the mercury and so blacken the container. In a 110 volt lamp 50 inches long, 0.03 to 0.003 per cent, and preferably 0.01 per cent, by weight of copper may be added to the mercury. Nickel or chromium may be added in the same molecular proportions, or 0.01 grs. of aluminium may. be added to each ounce of mercury, or mixtures of these metals may be added. A concave meniscus with thin films rising against the wall gives high electron emission and facilitates starting. The copper &c. does not affect the vapour tension and any copper leaving the mercury is readily carried back. When aluminium, or other metal which produces an amalgam reacting with air, is added, leaky containers can be detected by a scum on the mercury.
