Abstract

288,702. Rowlands, T. W. Jan. 11, 1927. Spray carburettors.-Consists in means for neutralizing or reducing the increased suction on the pilot nozzle due to the momentarv increased vacuum above the throttle which occurs when the latter is closed or partly closed with the engine still running at a high speed, without affecting the function of the pilot nozzle when normal conditions obtain. Between the carburettor b, Fig. 1, and induction pipe c is inserted a flangelike member a which supports at its outer end. Fig. 3, a cylinder d containing a piston f. The piston is retained in the cylinder by screws i and has an extension f<1> projecting into a space d<2> in communication through a duct a<1>, Fig. 1, in the member a, with the induction pipe above the throttle valve k. A port g in the cylinder is connected by a passage g<1> with the mixture passage h of the slow running nozzle. If the throttle k be suddenly closed, the increased suction lifts the piston and opens the port g to admit air to the slow-running passage and reduce the suction therein. In a modification, Fig. 4, the flange-like member l has bearings m, n for two spindles, one, m<1>, being the pivot of a lever o, the end o<1> of which is adapted to close the air inlet h<1> to the slow-running passage h, the other spindle n<1> being the pivot for links r which carry at their other ends the spindle q of a centrifugal governor driven, through flexible shafting, from the engine. The links r are coupled by a link s to an arm k<2> on the throttle valve spindle k'. When the throttle is open, the governor is moved completely away from the end o<2> of the lever o, but when it is closed, the governor is brought into the position shown and the movable collar p<1>, if the engine is running fast, engages the end o<2> and rocks the lever o to open the air inlet h<1>. As the speed falls, the collar p' moves back and the inlet h<1> is closed again. In a further modification switches, actuated respectively by the collar p<1> and throttle arm k<2> are introduced into the electrical circuit of a solenoid, the core of which forms a valve adapted to admit air to the pilot nozzle outlet passage. Alternatively, according to one of the Provisional Specifications, the core of the solenoid may rock a lever such as o, Fig. 4.
