Abstract

286,725. International Fireproof Products Corporation, (Assignees of Vivas, F. S.). March 11, 1927, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Fireproofing; proofing against bacteria etc.; proofing processes.-Wood and other material is fireproofed and preserved from decay by treatment successivelv with solutions of chlorides and boric acid and of metallic sulphates respectively, so as to precipitate, insoluble sulphates in the wood. Resinous wood may be first treated to remove the resin, for instance by means of sodium hydrate. In the.process described, the wood is first treated in a closed vessel with a solution containing 8 ounces of sodium hydrate to the gallon of water for about 1“ hours at 212‹ F. The solution is drawn off and a vacuum created in the vessel. A solution containing 2¢ lbs. of calcium chloride, ¢ lb. of ammonium chloride, and ¢ lb. of boric acid to each gallon of water is then run into the container, with admitting air. The solution is placed under a pressure of 150 lbs. per square inch, and the temperature maintained at 175‹ F., except in the case of white oak, when the solution is used cold. Pressure is maintained until the wood has absorbed a volume of solution corresponding to 220 lbs. of solids per thousand cubic feet of timber, the volume absorbed being read off by means of a gauge glass on the vessel. The solution is withdrawn from the retort and hot air blown in for an hour to dry the timber. A solution containing 4 ozs. of zinc sulphate and 4 ozs. of aluminium sulphate to the gallon of water is then run into the vessel and placed under a pressure of about 150 lbs. per square inch, maintained for one to two hours. The timber is then treated with hot air. for about 6 hours. If the timber is for use in or near water, aluminium sulphate in the second solution is replaced by copper sulphate. The treatment with sodium hydrate solution saponifies the resins of the wood, which collect at the bottom of the vessel and are drawn off as a by-product.
