Abstract
286,483. Skinner, W. P. April 4, 1927. Moulding indiarubber &c. signs. - An advertising sign or number-plate comprises a body 5, Figs. III. and IV., of hardened plastic material, such as ebonite, having separate characters 2 embedded therein so as to key with the material while exposing their characteristic form. The letters &c. have a raised portion 3, which forms the visible part, and a flange 4 which keys with the body material 5. A strengthening back plate 6 may be provided having countersunk holes 7 with which the material 5 keys. In manufacture the characters 3 are laid face down in a mould 8, Fig. VI., a raw ebonite sheet is laid on them, and a backing plate on the ebonite. Pressure is applied by a plunger 10 and the ebonite is then vulcanized. Alternatively, the backing plate may be put first into the mould.
