Abstract

Density separators; strainers. - Vapours or impurities are separated from air or gas by inducing or driving the air or gases through a container in which are located cooling or condensing surfaces and straining gauzes. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the casing A contains the condensing and straining elements B<1>, B<2>, B<3>. The outlet D is arranged in the pipe F so that the flow of gases in the pipe F induces a flow of gas and vapour through the pipe C a,nd cylinder A. The pipe C may be connected to an engine crank chamber or other vessel containing gases impregnated with vapour to be extracted. The oil or other condensed vapour is condensed and with other impurities is intercepted by the elements B<1>, B<2>, B<3> and is drained away through the pipe G. In a modified form of apparatus the mixture of gas and vapour is drawn through the casing A by a fan driven by a turbine rotated by the stream of gas in the pipe F. In a further modification, the mixture passes through the space between a rotary cone M, Fig. 3, and a fixed water-cooled part L. A turbine wheel H<2> in the pipe F operates the cone M and the fan N which induces the flow of the mixture. The vapour is separated and condensed and leaves the apparatus by the pipe G, while the gas leaves by the pipe O. The apparatus may have a vertical axis and the inner conical part may be stationary while, the outer part rotates. In this case the outer part may have perforated serrations through which liquid is discharged. The conical parts may be replaced by discs.
