485,807. Centrifugal separators. TRIGGS, W. W. (Centrifix Corporation) April 22, 1937, No. 11505. [Class 23] Apparatus for separating entrained matter, such as oil or the like, from gases or vapours, consists of a casing 2 divided into two chambers by a partition 7 supporting a tangentially bladed centrifugal separator 8 which forms the only channel of communication between the two chambers. The inlet 5 is connected to the lower chamber and the outlet pipe 6 leads from the upper chamber, while the separator has upper and lower races for the separated entrained matter. The incoming gas with the entrained oil passes along the pipe 9 and meets a jet 16 of vapour such as steam from the nozzle 14 on the pipe 14a. The mixture passes through the tuyere element 11, which causes it to whirl in the main chamber on its way to the separator 8. The temperature is such that the oil is in liquid form while the steam remains in vapour form, and owing to the whirling motion some of the liquid particles, with any solids that may be present, are thrown against the casing wall, and drop to the bottom where a drain 10 is provided. The separator 8 has two end rings 8c, 8d, connected by overlapping blades 8a the spaces between these blades providing tangential entries for the whirling stream of gas and vapour. The blades are made of thin metal with stiffened outer edges, and the cross sectional area of the body portion of the separator is substantially double that of the outlet orifice 8h. A circumferential race 8x is arranged at the top of the separator and the inward extension of the top plate from this race forms a conical surface 8c<11>. A corresponding race 8y is formed at the bottom of the separator and the two races are connected by ducts 8m. The whirling material from the casing passes tangentially between the blades 8a, and the entrained particles are thrown outwards while the clean gas and vapour pass upwards to the outlet 6. The particles collect in the races 8x, 8y and pass by the drain pipe 8t to the vessel 9x from which they overflow to the discharge drain 10. The apparatus may be modified to permit the inlet and outlet to be placed opposite each other.
