Abstract
286,739. Sharples Specialty Co., (Assignees of Sharples, L. P.). March 11, 1927, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Strainer separators; discharging.-A centrifugal strainer with a helical conveyer for the solids has a zone of small average diameter where the major portion of liquid is removed, and a zone of large average diameter where the material is subjected to a greater centrifugal force and the remainder of the liquid is removed. Arms upon the hub 32 carry the helical plates 34 arranged just inside the rotary screen 10; the plates and screen are driven at different speeds from the shaft 40. The mixture is supplied to the separating space through the pipe 24, and the first separation occurs in the part 22 which is of conical form and of small average diameter. After losing the greater part of its liquid the material passes through the intermediate portion 25 to the portion 23 of large diameter. Further drying occurs in the part 23 and the solids are collected in the hopper 49; the final discharge is controlled by the rotary valve 50. The liquid is collected by a vessel 44 and passes away through the passage 48. Air or other gas may be supplied through the pipe 52; the gas may be heated or it may act chemically upon the solids. The screen is constructed as shown in Fig. 3; the sheet metal shell 10 has perforations 26, and an inner screen 27 has small perforations 28. The two members 10, 27 are separated by a spacing member 29 made of woven wire which permits liquid to circulate. The pitch of the helical plates 34 diminishes as the diameter of the separator increases so that the layer of solids is of apyroximate constant thickness. To prevent any corrosive action from occurring, the shell and the discharge openings may be lined with protective material.
