Piled and packed materials, treating with fluids; winch machines; circulating fluids through travelling materials; plant for series of operations. -An apparatus for bleaching fabrics in a continuous manner from grey to finished white in a single handling comprises means for saturating the fabric in open width, means for converting the fabric into rope form, and means for feeding the fabric in rope form into successive U-shaped independent compartments of a kier each with its own pump for circulating the liquid therein. The fabric in open width is passed through a bath 7 with squeeze-rolls 8, 9, which bath may be mounted on the kier 1. The fabric then passes through the first of a set of reciprocating eyes 13, between a pair of feed squeeze-rolls 11, 12, and over a driven lattice 26 to accumulate in sinuous form in the first of a series of compartments 2. Thence the fabric passes up through another eye, between the rolls 11, 12 again and over the lattice 26, through eadh compartment in succession. The liquid in each compartment passes through apertures 31, 32 to a space below the false bottom 3 whence it is withdrawn and passed on to the falling fabric by a pump 23. The liquid beneath each false bottom 3 may be heated by a steam pipe 5, covers 29 trapping some of the steam rising from the compartments. The lattice 26 may be replaced by another set of reciprocating eyes. According to the Provisional Specification, the false bottom may be perforated.
