Abstract

285,665. Mee, A. W. March 17, 1927. Stiffeners.-A shank stiffener comprises the following features in combination, a narrow substantially vertical breast part 2, a comparatively wide arch portion 6, and a narrow waist portion 1 stiffened throughout its length, preferably being obtuse angled in cross-section. This renders it suitable for attachment between the inside and outside of the shoe. It may however be attached to the outside. The lower extremity of the part 2 is bent backwards to form a tongue 3 for attachment between the heel 4 and top piece 5. Holes 9, 10, 11 may be provided for securing nails. In Louis type heels the waist portion of the stiffener is preferably located between the inner and outer soles, and accordingly the heel seat portion of split soles has a slot 14 to permit the entrance of the waist portion of the stiffener. After the stiffener is fitted it is covered in this case by the breast flap 15.
