Ironing-machines with reciprocating irons; ironing-machines with hand-operated irons.-In an ironing-machine in which the iron 1 is suspended from a carriage 2 which can be moved manually along a track in its supporting member 3 in a direction transverse of the work table 4, the supporting member is reciprocated by power longitudinally of the work table. The supporting member is guided along tracks. 5 in a guide-member 13 which carries also an additional pair of parallel tracks 11, 12 which are engaged alternately by a gear or friction wheel 10 driven by an electro-motor 8 through reduction gear 9. The motor and associated gear are pivoted at 16 on the support 3, and are manually rocked about the pivot by manipulation of a handle 18 to move the gear wheel 10 into engagement with the appropriate track. A spring maintains the gearwheel in its neutral position on release. In a modification, the motor and gear may be rigidly secured to the supporting member 3, and the tracks are then pivoted in the guide member 13, manually operated means being provided to rock them so that one or other engages the gear wheel. Alternatively a single track and a reversible motor may be used. The guide member is pivoted at 20 so that, by operation of pedals 22, 23, the iron may be raised and lowered.
