Metallic springs.-Composite springs adapted to resist. axial compression and of the kind having an inner series of compression rings 3 and an outer coacting series of tension springs 2 or similarly coacting helical .elements, are constructed with the outer elements of greater cross section than the inner elements or of superior material so as to obtain the same limits of fatigue. The outer surfaces of the outer elements 2 and the inner surfaces of the inner elements 3 may have a curved generatrix cooperating with the conical engaging surfaces to give substantially constant radial ring thickness. In the case of inner and outer helical elements screwed into one another, relative tangential movement of the ends may be prevented by welding or rivetting them together.
