Abstract

Density separators.-A centrifugal machine for liquid separation has a central feed member A, and a discharge device, for the heavier component, consisting of tubes G which extend inwardly from the periphery of the drum; they then run close to, and approximately parallel to, the axis of the drum. As the tubes discharge close to the axis, loss of energy is reduced to a minimum. The lower ends of the tubes terminate in a ring H which helps to secure the pile of discs. The heavier component, for in- .stance skim milk, is discharged from the tubes G into the chamber K; the upper ends of the tubes may be bent backwards or the material may be removed to facilitate discharge. The cream discharges through the screw J, placed below the milk outlets, into the chamber L. A hole N may be provided in each tube G for cleaning purposes, or a channel opening inwards may be wholly or partly substituted for each tube. The top nut of the machine may approach close to the discharge ends of the tubes G. In a modification, the milk passes from the tubes into an annular recess T in the nut S and is discharged through vertical channels U or horizontal channels V. In another modification the lower side of the nut S forms a conveying surface for the discharged liquid. In another modification the tubes G are shortened and the cream screw J is arranged above the milk outlet.
