Abstract

284,489. Calabi, A. G. March 10, 1927. Parachutes.-Main and pilot parachutes 15, 19 are packed in a knapsack 14, the flaps 13 of which are drawn together by a detachable screw device 5 and held together by a breakable cord. The calotte of the pilot parachute is fixed to the lid 18 of a box 16 within which the parachute spring 17 is compressed. The end 4, Fig. 1, of a square bushing 3 is screwed into the box 16 holding it closed. A milled tube. 5, which is raised and lowered on the bushing 3 by a screwed stem 2 engaging the bushing, supports tension cords 7 which pass through a flange on the bushing 3 and are connected by hooks 9 to tags on the flaps. By raising the tube 5, the flaps are drawn firmly over the parachute and the box 16 and are then tied together and the screw device removed. The parachutes are connected by ropes 22, Fig. 6, and which are also fixed to a canvas disc 24 on the box 16. The parachute 19 is practically spherical owing to reinforcing seams 26 thereon.
