Abstract

284,291. B³chi, A. Jan. 27, 1927, [Convention date]. Motor power plant.-In plant having an internal combustion engine exhausting into a turbine means are provided to keep the temperature of the exhaust gases passing to the turbine above the condensation temperature of the water contained in them when running under low load. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, which shows a sixcylinder four-stroke engine 1 exhausting into a turbine 2 which drives a pre-compressor 3, the result is obtained by closing some of the turbine nozzles 10 at no load or at light loads. The valve 11 for this purpose may be actuated by a spring- pressed piston 13 arranged in a cylinder 12 to which air is admitted from the induction pipe 7 by a pipe connection 16. The valve may be actuated by a link connection 20 with the governor 17, and hand adjusting means 30 may be provided. In the application to a two-stroke engine, Fig. 4, the induction pipe 7 is divided into two branches 24, 25, one of whch is closed automatically at no load or at light loads by a valve 11 actuated as described above. The exhaust pipe is divided into two branches 4, 23, both of which may lead to exhaust turbines, or they may lead to different stages of one turbine, or only the pipe 4 through which the hotter gases pass may lead to a turbine. Two rows of inlet and exhaust ports 28, 29 are shown, but in a modification only one row is provided, the induction pipe 7 being suitably branched.
