Abstract

Carriage-shift mechanism; shift-key actions.- The bed 20, Fig. 1, of the carriage 15 is secured at each end to a bar 14 mounted on widely-sep- -arated rocking arms 10, 13 secured to rock-shafts 11, 12 arranged in the same horizontal plane, an extension 9 of either or both of the arms 10 engaging an extension 8 of a lever 5 which together with a parallel lever 4 supports the shift-key 3. On depressing the shift-keys, the rocking arms move in the same direction and the carriage is shifted in a direction parallel to the printing plane without twisting. Either or both of the extensions 9 co- -operate with adjustable .and accessible stops for limiting the shift movements. The stops may consist of screws 24, 26 which are mounted in a flange 23 on the extension and a bracket 25 on the framework 1, and co-operate with a flange on the framework and the flange 23. In some cases only one shift. key is provided and the corresponding rocking arm 10 and bar 14 are omitted. Back-spacing mechanism.-A back-spacing pawl 40, Fig. 3, mounted on the carriage bed 20 is operated by means including a bell-crank 28 pivoted on one of the above-described bars 14 having shift mounting on rocking arms 10, 13, and the drive from the back-spacing key to the bell-crank is transmitted in a direction approximately parallel to the rocking arms, the arrangement preventing the rocking arms from being displaced on operating the back-spacing key. Preferably, the back-spacing key 27 is supported by parallel levers 29, 30, the lever 30 having an extension 31 which is connected to the bell-crank by means of a link 32 arranged parallel to the rocking arms. The link maintains connection between the back-spacing- key and bell-crank when the carriage is shifted. The bell-crank may engage a second bell-crank 36 pivoted on the carriage bed and having a pin-and-slot connection 39 with t-lie back-spacing pawl.
