Be it known that I, CHARLES Siento, citizen of the United States, residing at New York, inthe county of New York and State of New York, vhave invented certain new and useful Improvements `in Typewriters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates vto a typewriter and particularly to a construction thereof cornprising. units adapted to be separately assembled and readily disposed in operative relation upon the main frame of a typewriter.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction wherein the frame base carries the key levers, space bar unit, and case `shifting means and supports a fulcrum/bar unit carrying type bars, sublevers, tuiiversal bail and ribbon vibrating and shifting members, together with a top plate supporting an escapement unit adapted to be disposed-in operative relation to said bail and space bar unit.
A further object of ythe invention is to provide an improved form of fulcrum bar unit for the sublevers detachably mounted upon the frame above the key levers in substantially the vertical plane of the typebar pivots upon a segment supported from said fulcrum bar which is also rovided with means for supportingr and guiding a ribbon vibrating device in its case shifting movement.
Another object of the invention is to present an improved unit for supporting members of a typewriter mechanism comprising a horizontal fulcrum bar having vertical supporting uprights for a segment carrying typebars, sublevers and universal bail and a slide block upon its rear face, whereby lthe partscarried by ythis-unit are adapted to be assembled in cooperative relation with case shift parts carried bythe frame and an escapement unit upon the top plate of the p machine.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention willbe hereinafter set forth andthe novel features thereof defined by,

The numeral 10 designates the base or frame of the machine which may beof any desired construction or configuration, and is preferably provided with standards 11 at each side thereof for supporting the top plate 12 which is detachably secured thereto for application after the parts within the 4frame have been assembled. This top 1 plate unit carries the ribbon spools 13 and sup-r ports the carriage 14 at the rear thereof. To the under face of the plate 12 an escapement drum or housing 15 is secured andthe driving pinion 16 therefrom meshes with a rack 17 upon the carriage. The carriage is also provided with the case shifted platen 1S controlled through lever arms 19 which are connected by a `shift rail 20 at the rear of the carriage. This rail may be depressed to shift the platen upward by any desired means, such as the vertical shift rody 21 Lprovided at its upper end with a swinging releasing arni 22 carrying a roller 23 which rides upon the upper face of the rail. The shift, rod may be actuated by means which will be hereinafter described.
For the purpose of supporting the assembled sublevers andtypebars an improved form of unit is provided and comprises the horizontal fulcrum bar 25 having lugs 26 at its opposite ends detachably mounted. upon cooperative lugs 27 from the inner face of the frame 10. At each end of this bar vertically disposed inwardly inclined uprights 2S are formed which support from their upper ends the typebar segment 29. The rear face of this bar also carries a slide block 30 to support parts to be hereinafter described. c
The segment 29 is provided with the pivot rod 31 for the typebars 32 which are formed at' their .pivoted ends with an actuating slot 33 of the usual character. When the free ends of the typebars are at rest upon the support 311 carried by the front plate 4S mounted on cross plate 85 of the frame, the pivoted .ends of the bars extend rearwardly beyond their pivot and are there connected tothe suhlevers 35 by means of pins 36 eX- tending therefrom.k For thispurpose the sublevers are pivoted at 39 on the front face of bar 35 and the vertical arms 37 are deflected to pass above the fulcrum bar and are of materially greater length than the horizontal arms 38 thereof. Depending' fromthe arms 38 of the sublevers are links 40 pivoted thereto at 41 and removably connected to the key levers 42 by rivets having expanded free ends, as shown in Fig.v 5. By this means the assembled typebars and sublevers are applied to the base and connected to the key levers by a suitable tool. The key levers are pivoted beneath the cross bar 44 at the rear of the base and supported in raised position by springs-45 extending therefrom to fingers 46 carried by the base. The key board ends of the key levers are guided by thecoinb plate 47, depending from the crossr plate 85 of the frame, and are provided with the usual. key caps 49.
The segment 29 also supports a universal lbail 50 in position to be actuated by a shoulder upon the typebar in the usual manner, and this bail is formed with a rearward depending portion 51 terminating in an elongated Vertical case shifting head 52. This head coperates withV a color shift member 53 carried bythe vertical arm of a vibrator lever 54, the horizontal arm 55 of which is connected by a pivoted link 56 with the carrier 57 for the ribbon 58 carried by the spools 13. The lever 54 is pivoted between rearwardly extending arms 59 from the slide plate 60 mounted upon the slide block 30, as shown in Fig. 3. This plate has also lateral angular pivoting brackets 61 at opposite sides thereof upon which the depending legs 63 from the ribbon carrier support 62 are pivoted. The upper portion of this support is formed to provide aline `finder 64 at each side of the ribbon carrier which is slidably mounted in the support by means of the lugs 65 which permit free ribbon vibration. The support and carrier are normally pressed toward the platen by means of a spring 66 interposed between the support and Asegment and such movement limited by a keeper 2li-carried vby the segment, see Fig. 2. The slide plate 60 is given its vertical movement for case shifting through an arm 67 carried by the rock shaft 68 pivoted in the machine frame. bifurcated at 69 and engages a loop 70 at the lower portion of theslide plate. The rock shaft is also provided with a rearward arm 71 pivotally connected with the shift rod 21 for actuating the latter. This shaft is rocked by means of a depending finger 72 adapted to be engaged by. a hooked member 73 carried by a shift lever 74 mounted similarly to the key levers before described. This construction provides for a downward movement ofvtheshift rodand an upward movement of the `ribbon carrier support in the case shifting operation. This yoke is pivoted from the housing 15 as at 8O and carries the fixed dog 81 and movable dog 82 coperating with the escapement wheel 83, while the yoke is restored to its initial. position by a tension spring 84 extending therefrom to the housing. The bail is supported to reciprocate in a horizontal plane by the hanger links 86 depending from the segment and restored to its rest position by a spring 87 on these links which relieves the yoke from the pressure thereof. The yoke is lalso assembled in detachable relation to the space bar mechanism by a de zending finger 88 which contacts with a rock arm 89carried by the rock shaft 90 mounted in the base frame. This shaft is provided with the usual levers 91 extending to thespace vbar 92 and with a vertical arm 93 from which a restoring spring 94 extends to the base frame. These parts are specilically disclosed and claimed in my application filed ebruary 14, 1920, Serial No. 358591v for escapement mechanism.
The yoperation of the invention will be apparent from the foregoing description and presents anA improved typebar action particularly adapted for the type of front strike typewriter shown in thisapplication. This four-part action secures the advantages of reduced leverage and accelerated stroke at thetypebar connection Aand a direct downward. pull through. thc link connection between the sublever and key lever whichfmaterially reducesfriction at this point and provides a quick and easy action in the operation of the 'machine The mounting of the typebars'andsublevers upon the detachable fulcrumfunit facilitates a convenient assemblage of the parts and insures a proper relation of these parts at all times. This unit also carries the universal bail and ribbon vibrator which may be thus assembled in operative relation before insertion in the machine and the top unit carrying the-escapement mechanism subsequently applied to detachably connect such mechanism with the bail for actuation thereby. Such application of the top unit also brings the escapement into detachable coperative relation with the space bar mechanism carried by the base frame ofthe machine. This arrangement of the typebar action provides space iio above the key levers on the base frame for the dispositionjof the case shifting unit, space bar unit 'and other` mechanism. In the assembling of the ma'chine these parts may be arranged upon the base and the fulcrum unit carrying coperating members subsequently applied and the parts connected while they are readily accessible for that purpose. The
top unit may then be applied to bring the escapement mechanism into cooperative relationwith the universal bail and space bar mechanism. The invention provides a single unit carrying the typebars and their sublevers, the universal bail, and the ribbon vibrator mounted for case shifting movement thereon. In Lthe typebar'action it will be notedthat the pivots of the typebars and subleversare in substantially the same vertical plane ,while the vertical arm of the latter extends rearwardly when at rest and during the stroke vtravels forward until it reaches substantially the vvertical plane of the link connection with the key lever when the typebar is at the Vprinting point. This travel in 'anfarc for substantially equal distances above the vertical plane of the sublever pivot effects a smooth and easy movement of the typebar and avoids resistance in the returning or retracting travel thereof.
This invention presents a simple, eflicient and 'economically constructed mechanism for the typebar action and the ready and convenient assemblage of the units of a typewriter. While the details of the invention have been specifically shown and described, still it is not confined thereto as changes and alterations may be made therein without dearting from the spirit of the invention. y
What I claim is- 1. In a typewriter, a frame, a key lever pivoted at the rear thereof, a typebar action unit comprising a detachable fulcrum bar secured upon said frame above and intermediate the ends of said key lever, a segment supported from said bar, a sublever pivotedupon said bar, a link pivoted to said sublever and connected to the key lever by an inserted pivot, and a typebar upon said segment connected to said sublever.
2. In a typewriter, a frame, a key lever pivoted at the rear adjacent the base thereof, a detachable fulcrum bar mounted upon said frame above and intermediate the ends of said key lever, a segment supported from said bar in substantially the vertical plane thereof, a sublever pivoted upon said bar, a vertically disposed link pivoted to said sub and key levers, and a typebar upon Said segment having a pin and slot connection with the sublever.
3. In a typewriter, a frame, a key lever pivoted thereon, a horizontal fulcrum bar unit extending across4 said frame above said key lever, a sublever mounted upon said bar and connected to the key lever, a segment supported in a. vertical plane from said bar, a typebar mounted in said segment and connected to lsaid sublever, a case shifting member mounted upon the frame above the key lever, and a ribbon support slidably mounted upon said 'fulcrum bar and detachably connected to said member.
4. In a typewriter, a frame, a key lever pivoted thereon at its rear, a horizontal fulcrum bar unit extending across the frame above and intermediate the ends of said key lever, a sublever mounted upon said bar and connected to said key lever, a segment supported by said bar, a typebar mounted on said segment and connected to said sublever, a case shifting member mounted upon the frame above the rear of said key lever, a slide block carried by said fulcrum bar, and a ribbon support slidably mounted upon said block and connected to said member.
5. In a typewriter, a frame, a. horizontal fulcrum bar unit provided with vertical standards, a segment mounted upon said standards at the front of said bar, a typebar mounted upon said segment, a sublever upon said fulcrum bar, a key lever mounted beneath the fulcrum bar, a ribbon vibrating member carried by a support upon the rear of said fulcrum bar, and means upon the frame at the rear of said bar for shifting said member thereon.
6. In a. typewriter, a base frame provided with key levers and having lugs at opposite sides, a horizontal fulcrum bar rigidly secured to said lugs, sublevers mounted upon said bar, vertical uprights from said bar, and a segment carried by said uprights and provided with typcbars.

In a typewriter, a base frame provided with key levers, a U-shaped unit detachably secured upon said base and comprising a horizontal fulcrum bar and opposite vertical standards, a segment mounted upon said standards and provided with typebars, and Sublevers upon the fulcrum bar connected to said typebars and key levers.

In a typewriter. a frame, atop plate having an escapement mechanism mounted upon the under face thereof, a typebaractuated universal bail supported from the frame, an arm from said bail to actuate said escapement mechanism, a ribbon vibrator upon the frame beneath said escapement, and a depending arm from said bail eX- tended beneath the escapement to actuate said vibrator.

In a typewriter, a frame, a top plate having an escapement mechanism mounted upon "the under face thereof, a fulcrum unit secured to the frame and carrying a typebar actuated universal bail, an arm from said bail detachably connected to said escapement mechanism, a ribbon vibrator mounted upon the fulcrum unit, means upon the frame base beneath the vibrator for case shifting the same, and a depending arm from said bail having a vertical head disposed to actuate and permit case shifting of said vibrator.

In a typewriter, a base unit provided with :ey levers, a fulcrurn unit mounted thereon and provided with sublevers, typebars and a universal bail disposed to be actuated thereby, and a top unit carrying an escapement mechanism upon its under :tace adapted to be assembled in detachable relation to said universal bail for actuation thereby.

In a. typewriter, a base unit provided with key levers, a ulcrum unit mounted thereon and provided with sublevers, typebars and a universal bail disposed to be actuated thereby, a space bar unit carried by said base unit, and a top unit carrying,` an escapement mechanism adapted to be assembled in detachable relation to said universal bail and space bar Vunit for independent actuation by either thereof.

In a typewriter, a base unit provided with key levers, a ulcrum unit mounted thereon andprovided with sublevers, typeed upon said fulcrum unit and detachably connected to said case shifting unit, and a top unit carrying an escapement mechanism disposed for detachable connection withsaid universal bail.

In a typewriter, a base unit carrying hey levers and a case shifting` unit, a fulcrum unit carrying typebars, sublevers, universal bail, and shiftably mounted ribbon vibrator disposed to be actuated by said caso shitting unit, a top .plate provided with an escapement mechanism disposed to be actuated by said universal bail, a carriage upon said top plate having a case shifting platen, and connections from said platen to said case shifting unit. n
14. In a typewriter, a iiulcrum unit comprising a horizontal bar having uprights at its opposite ends, lever pivoting means upon one face thereof, and av slide block upon the opposite face thereof.
