The universal bar lis connected to the earriage escapement for actuating it, preferably as follows:
N represents a nearly horizontal link pivoted at its front end to the rock arm m8 and at its rear end to the depending arni of a bell crank lever a which liasa rearwardly extending arm connected by a rod n to the escapement. The bell crank lever 11, is pivoted on a bracket 1i secured to thel supporting bridge for the carriage track. As the carriage escapement is mounted on a fixed part of the machine while the universal bar is mounted on the shifting supporting plate G, the link N is pivoted to the bell crank 1a in a plane midway between the normal' and shifted positions of the pivot which connects the link to the arm 112,8, so that the action of the escapement will be the saine in both positions of the sul'iporting plate G.
By these connections the eseapenient wheel is released every time the universal bar is moved rearwardly by a type-bar, and the spring m7 acts to restore the eseapenient lever as well as the universal bar to the normal position.

The vibrator shownhas ears 0 by which it is slidably retained .on a stationary center `druide P for the type-bars, and it is pivoted at its lower end to the front. end of a vibrator lever Q.
The center fluide .shown has downwardly and rearwardly extending' legs p rigidly sevcured to the bar M, preferably by thesepins until the other curing screws for this bar. The center guide slides up or down in front of the vibrator when the type-bars are shifted to different printing relations -to. the platen and always retains 'a fixed position relative to the typebars.
The vibrator O is also actuatedby the universal bar through mechanism, which is constructed as follows: l.

In the position ofthe link shown in the drawings it engages the pins of the short arm 1Il and long arm s and connects these arms. By moving the link sidewise-it is disenfraved from the )ins s3 S5 and is en- D 21 i gag'ed with the other pins s? s4, thereby connecting the long arm 1 to the short arm 8. Thus by 'shifting' the link S sidewise one way or the other,l the vibrator lever can be given a short or a long throw suitable for using either of two different ink fields on the ribbon.
