To all Whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE Vonminn, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented cer men and useful Improvements in 'lyiar Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.

Where, as is now usual in machines of this class, lines or rows of dots, dashes, or other characters can only be made by successively depressing and releasing the key or liey lever for each character in the row, an unnecessary amount of time and energy is wasted, and the usefulness of the machine is elfectually limited because of the danger of confusion if the lines are omitted, and the waste oi time if the lines of'clots or dashes have to he made by repeatedly and succes sively depressing the key. This is particularly the case in the billing of goods, where the items are arranged in columns at the extreme left of the sheet and the charges at the extreme right of the sheet. If the intervening space is left blank the reader, in endearoring to select a particular item and its cost, often resorts to a ruler to guide the eye, while the use of a line of dots or (lashes to connect the item and its cost is forbidden on account of the consumption of time and energy.

The carriage and rack are connected with the usual power drum 83 and its actuating spring 84, by means of a strap 85 sedurcd at one end upon the periphery of the drum and at the other end to the end of the carriage which is farthest away from the drum. The guide plate is connected with a reciprocating means, as shown in Fig. 23, consisting of the levers H, I, J, K, the linlLLJmd the bell crank N, through the medium of whichiit is operated. The group of mechanism which I have called the rocker arm, gripping'and controlling device lV, as best shown in Figs. 5

In Fig. 2 of the drawings the parts are shown in their normal position when out of use, while in Fig. 1 they are shown in the position assumed by them when the key lever J is depressed by the operator. As will be there seen, a hen the plate 68 is depressed against the pressure of its spring the controlling lever 64- will be turned so as to actuate the forked bell crank 52 through the medium of the rod 62, bell crank 59, and rod 57. When the bell crank is thus turned, its forked end 54- will push the latch 36 and its casing 37 in the direction of the iaw 35 and thereby blOCh the entrance to the 5111116, as shown in Figs. 7 and 16, leaving an opening 81, however, to receive the journal end 78 of the link 74-. At the same time the bell crank 52 also actuates the spring lever 49 by means of its projecting cam lug 53, which engages the nose 51 of the spring lever. In this movement the latch 36, the rocking arm 31, and the spring .30 will have changed from the position shown in Fig. 15 to that shown in Fig. 16. This is accomplished by the depression of the plate 68 before the depression of the key lever J has begun. The rotation of the rocking arm 31 about the stud 30 effected by the movement of the spring lever 41) in that itshifts the line of force in the spring 50 from one.

Another movement etlected by the depression of the plate (38, through the medium of the rocking arm 31, the forward and upward movement of the transmission rod 19 owing to its pivotal connection 40 with the rocking arm. When thus moved, the transmission rod will communicate its motion to the drop hanger 8. and cause the hanger to s ing forward and rotate about its upper journal bearing 9. carrying with it the pawl 11' which is pivotally mounted on the lower journal. shaft 10, until the hanger bar engages. and is stopped by, the pin 7. During this movement the pawl is held with its stop pin 14 pressed against the hanger, by means of the spring 1?. This upward and forward movement, it will be seen, has changed the position of the pawl 15 from its normal position shown in Fig. 5, wherein it is drawn out of range of the toothed wheel 2. to that shown in Fig. 19, wherein it is forced forward into the path of the toothed wheel as thelw heel turns in the direction of the arrow. The functions then of the controllin lever 64 may be summarized follows: .irst: Its depression by the operator changes the position of the parts from that shown in Figs. 4 and 15 to that shown in Figs. 1, '3", 14c, 16, .18, and 19. In other words it throws the machine into gear, with the pawl 15 in the path of the toothed. wheel :5. and prepares the latch and gripping do ice for the reception of the downturned end 7 'u' the link 74. Secondly: Its release from pressure by the operator permits the spring 70 to expand and turn it back into normal position, thereby restoring the forked bell. crank the latch and its casing to their normal position, but the spring lever 49 will remain. in the position shown in Fig. 14, since the cam lug 53-, upon being restored, simply recedes from the contact nose 5i, and leaves the springlever 49 unmoved. It will be evident, therefore, that the rocking arm 31, transmission rod 19, hanger S, pawl 15, and spring 50, which depend upon the lever 49 for restoration to normal position, will also remain unmoved, and will retain the positions shown in Figs. 1, 13, 1-1, 16, 1'4", 12$, and 19. except that the latch and its casing 37 will have been restored to normal position through the movement of the mental guide 55.
The restoration of the spring lever 49 and the above named parts depending on it occurs follows: It will be remembered that pawl 15 is still in gear, that is in the path of the toothed wheel because the lever +9 still holds the spring 50 to the left of dead center (stud 30). And even if the operator of the machine trips the usual carriage release lever and pulls the carriage to the right to start a new line, thereby reversing the direction of the toothed wheel 2, the above mentioned unrestored parts will still remain unmoved except that the pawl will ride over the teeth of the Wheel 2 against the tension of its spring 17, as shown in Fig. 18. But when the operator begins to write by manipulating the keys, the eseapement shaft and the toothed wheel 2 will now turn in the other direction, namely to the right, as shown in Fig. 19, and will engage and kick back the pawl 15, which is still in range. The impulse thus given the pawl will be transmitted through the rod 19 to the rocking arm 31. thereby turning this arm until the spring 50 passes dead center and draws the lever 49 back to its normal position. When thus restored the lever 49 will. hoid in restored position all of the above named parts depending on it.
