1907, (Patent No. 891,047) in which are shown two independently vibratable ribbons pairs of .29
and winding mechanism therefor mounted upon the wellknown Underwood front mrike' writing machine. In said application, the ribbons are shown carried upon two spools lying in front of the platen, with shiftable means for windin the spools of either air, and means for vibrating the ribbon w ich is carried by the winding spools. The present invention is in the nature of an improvement upon said mechanism, and also upon the mechanism disclosed in the pending application No. 283,440, (Patent N 0 883370) of John C. lin. In said McLaughlin application, each ribbon spool .tw.0 winding gears are shiftable into and out of mesh with the spool gears to wind either ribbon, while the other remains idle.
The principal object of the )resent invention is to improve, and simpli the ribbonwinding means, adapting the two-ribbon devices to be applied to existing types of machines.
In said applications ribbon shift keys are provided upon the front of the machine, to operate a rock shaft which extends rearwardl to connect to the ribbon winding and vibrating devices.
In carrying out my present invention, I mount upon the rock shaft a lever, one arm of which extends up and the other down, and I connect the ends of the lever to swiveled hangers which carry the-winding gears, so that the gears may be moved either toward each other or away from each other,'to connect with either one or the other pair of spools. The connection between said lever and said hangers is efiected by means of simple links, and the entire mechanism is compact and readily applied to existing types of machines.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 a front elevation partly in section showing the inside pair of spools connected .to the winding mechanism, and also showing a type in printing osition. Fig. 2 is a plan, and Fig. 3 a s1 e elevation of the ribbon mechanism. Fig. 4 is a sectional rear elevation of a detent for holding the ribbonshifting mechanism in either of three positions.
Upon the front side of a platen 1 strike tvpes 2, carried upon type bars 3 and adapted to strike through either a front ribbon 4 or a rear ribbon 5, which are of different colors or qualities. The front ribbon 4 is wound upon a pair of spools 6, 7 mounted at opposite sides of the printing point and in front of the platen, with their edges to the latter and contained in a pair of cups 8, 9. The ribbon which extends betweenthese spools is threaded through a vibrator 10 standing in front of the platen. The rear rihbon .5 is wound upon a pair ofspools 11,
12, carried in cups 13, 14 and threaded through a vibrator 15, which is mounted between the vibrator 10 and the platen. It will be seen thatthe pair of spools 6, 7 is between the spools 11, 12. so that two spools lie edge to edge upon each side of the printing point; the rear ribbon 5 extending in rear of the on s 8, 9.
In said U11 erwood ma hines, a universal bar or frame 17 mounted at its rear end upon upr' ht rocker-arms 18 is reciprocated backwardly and forwardly at the type strokes. The rocker arms 18 operate a slotted arm 20. The latter en ages a pin 21, of a crank 22 fixed upon .1 roc shaft 23, the latter having at each side of the machinean arm 24 carrying a pawl 25 to enga e a ratchet wheel 26 for winding the rib on. In said Underwood machine a shifter bar 27 (shown diagrammatically) throws one pawl 25 into action and the other pawl 25 out of action, Thus reversing the longitudinal travel of the ribbon. By means of said pawl -and ratchet mechanism, there is rotated at each side of the machine a pair of miter carried by shafts 3U 37 upon which are mounted the spools 11, 6 The gear 33 is mounted between adjacent gears 38, 39 fixed pppg shafts upon which are mounted spools The winding gear shafts 30, 31, are mounted- 1n hangers 40, 41, which at their lower ends are swiveled upon studs 42 projecting rearwardly from bars 43 secured upon the ribbon spool brackets 44; the latter secured by screws 45 upon the framework 46 of the machine. At their upper ends the hangers are confined by headed screws 47 secured in the brackets 44 and working in slots 45 formed in the hangers. At its up er end each hanger is bent-rearwardly to form an ear 48 perforated to form a bearing for the shaft; and near its lower end an ear 49 is secured to each hanger andperf'orated to form a bearing for the lower end of the shaft. The pivots 42 are placed so as to permit the required swinging movement of the gears 29 without becoming unineshed from the gears 28.
The shifting of the winding gears is effected by means of keys 50, 51 mounted at the front of the machine, upon a rock shaft 52, which extends rearwardly and carries a lever 52, which extends both upwardly and downwardly from said shaft. The upper end may be connected by a short link.54 to the'swiveled hanger 41, and the lower end of said lever is eonnectedby a long link 55,
which extends across the machine beneath the type bars 3, to the other swiveled hanger 40. When key 51 is depressed, the winding gears are shifted from the Fi 1 to the Fig. 2 position; the link 54 pu ing the ban er 41, shaft 31, and gear 33 to the right, igjl, and the link 55 thrusting the gear 32 to the left, so that the spools 11, 12 are caused to wind, and the spools 6, 7 to remain stationary. lVhen the key 50 is depressed, the parts are shifted back from the Fig. 2 to the Fig. 1 position, and the ribbon 4 is caused to wind at the type strokes. The detent 56 serves to hold the parts in either position.
' The link 55 is made up of two parts, one of which 57 is connected to the other by screws 58 engagingslots 59, to permit lengthening or shortening of the link, and effect fine variations in the relative positions of the winding gears 32 and 33, so that both may be caused to mesh properly with the spool gears at the operation of the ribbon keys. The ribbon vibrators 10, 15, are carried upon levers 60 and 61 respectively, whereby that ribbon is vibrated which is carried upon the winding spools, Said levers are fulcrumed together upon a stud 62 carried upon 'abracket 63 secured upon a platen shift rail 6-1. Said levers have wrists--65, 66 respeclively, either of which may be engaged by It yoke 67, connegted by a link 68 to a cranc 69 extending up from the rock shaft- 52. Said yolie 67 has vertical slots 70 formed in its opposite cheeks 71, 72, adapted to be engaged by the wrists 65, 66. The yoke is ad uStably mounted upon a standard 7 3 risg ing from the universal bar frame 17, and moves backwardly and forwardly at the type strokes, and by means of its engagement with either one or the other of the wrists 65, 66 causes the corresponding ribbon to vibrate to cover the printing point. When the key 51 is depressed to cause outer spools 11, 12 to wind, the crank 69 is swung to the ri ht as at Fig. 2, to engage the vibrating ydlre 67 with the Wrist 66 upon the lever 61, which operates the vibrator 15 carrying said ribbon. \Vhen the key 50 is depressed to cause the inner spools to wind, the yoke 67 is thrust to the left at Fig. 2, to become disengaged from the wrist 66 and engaged to the wrist to cause the vibrator 10 to vibrate the front ribbon 4, which is carried upon said spools.
It will be understood by reference to Fig. 4, which shows a rear view of the detent, that when the key 51 is depressed the detent 56 isswung over from the Fig. 4 position, until its pin ortooth 74 engages a hole 75, therebyconnecting the other ribbon spools to the winding mechanism, and the other vibrator to the universal bar 17. When it is desired that neither vibrator shall operate, the arm 56 is swung until the pin 74 engages a midway hole 76 in the plate 77; and at a this time the winding gears stand in midway positions, so that neither spool is wound 'at the type strokes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim I v 1. In a ty pewriting machine, the combination with twopairs of'spools, each spool provided with a gear, of two winding gears mounted upon shafts vibratable to connect the winding gears with one or the other pair of spool gears, a shift lever operated by a lingcr-piece and connected to one of said shafts to vibrate it, and a link extending from said lever to vibrate the other shaft in the opposite direction.

gears for all of said spools, two winding gears, a finger-piece, means controlled by said finger piece for shifting said windinggears into mesh with either pair of spool gears, and means for effecting fine adjustmounted upon shafts vibratable to connect 'the winding gears with one or the other pairof spool gears, a shiftlever extending in opposite directionsfrom its fulcrum and connected at one end by a short link to one of said shafts to vibrate it, and connected at its other end by a long link to the'other of said shafts.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination with two pairs of ribbon spool gears, of two winding gears, hangers upon which said winding gears are mounted, and a key operated lever connected to said hangers to shift the winding gears from one to theother pair of spool gears.
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination with two pairs of ribbon spoolgears, of two winding gears, shafts upon which the winding gears are mounted, pinions on said shafts, drive pinions meshing with said pinions swiveled hangers'carrying said shafts, and key-operated means connecting said hangers to shift the winding gears from one to'the other pair of spool gears.-

In a typewriting machine, the combination with two pairs of ribbon spool gears, of two winding gears, shafts upon which the winding gears are mounted, swiveled hangers carrying said shafts, a key-operated lever extending in opposite directions from its fulcrum, and means connecting the ends of the lever to said hangers respectively to move the winding gears either toward or away from each other into enga ement with either one or the other set of spoo gears.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination with two pairs of ribbon spool gears, of two winding gears, shafts u on which the winding gears are mounte swiveled hangers carrying said shafts, a key-operated lever extending in opposite directions from its fulcrum, means connecting one end of the lever to one of said hangers, and a link extending from the lever to the other of said hangers.-
12. In a typewriting machine, the combination with two pairs of ribbon spool gears, of two winding gears, shafts upon which the winding gears are mounted, swiveled hangers carrying said shafts, a key-bearing rockshaft, a lever extending in opposite directions from said rock shaft, a short link connecting one end of the lever to one of said hangers, and a long link connecting the other end of said lever to the other of said hangers.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combination with two pairs of ribbon spools and spool winding devices, of a finger-piece having means to effect connection between the spool-winding devices and either, pair of ribbon spools, vibrators for the ribbons, levers connected to the vibrators and provided with operating wrists, an actuator vibrating at the key strokes and having means to engage either of said wrists, and means connected to said finger-piece for shifting said actuator into engagement with 'either wrist and out of engagement with the other.
14'. In a typewriting machine, the combination with two pairs of ribbon spool gears, of two winding gears, shafts upon which the winding gears are mounted, swiveled hangers carrying said shafts, a key-bearing rock-shaft, a lever extending in opposite directions from said rock shaft, means connecting one end of the lever to one of said hangers, and a link connecting the other end of said lever to the other of said hangers, a pair of lovers for vibrating the ribbons, each lever having a wrist, an actuator vibrating at the key strokes, and means connecting said actuator to said rock shaft to shift it into engagement with either of said Wrists.
