Be it known that I, FRANK A. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type- VVriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
In using typewriting machines, it is frequently necessary to write a row of dots or dashes, for instance in connecting items on different lists, or columns, on the sheet, and this is'often particularly desirable in using tabulating machines. A tabulating key releases the typewriter carriage, and permits it to advance rapidly to the next stop, thus bringing the next column to the writing point.
The object of this invention is to provide simple and efficient means for writing a horizontal row of dots or dashes between col umns upon the paper, or whenever desired, and I accomplish this preferably automatically by the same movement that advances the carriage in tabulating.
While the invention is especially applicable to tabulating machines, it is also useful in ordinary typewriting machines, when employed for making out itemized lists of articles arranged in columns. In this case, the carriage would be released in the ordinary manner, but the dotting mechanism would operate automatically as in the tabulating machine, by the movement of the carriage, as it advances to bring the next column to the writing point.
In carrying out my invention in connection with the Underwood typewriting machine, I provide a special type bar which is connected by a gear train to some part which moves when the carriage advances, such as the spring barrel; and I provide a special dotter key which may move a pinion of the said gear train into or out of mesh with a driving gear formed on the spring barrel. In said gear train at another point, are two gears normally separated, and I control the relationship of these gears to each other by the tabulating keys. When a tabulating key is depressed, these two gears are brought into mesh, and they form a clutch. Thus two keys control the operation of the dotting mechanism, viz., a dotting key and any Specification of Letters Patent.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan and partial section, showing my dotting mechanism in a typewriting machine of the well-known Underwood type. A carriage 54 is advanced by a tension band 53 attached to a spring barrel 5 and is guided by ears running on rail 56. A rack 51 on the carriage meshes with escapement pinion 52 connected to an escapement wheel 52 to control the feed of the carriage.
Tabulating keys 12 are arranged as usual, so that the rear end of each lever 12., moving in a guide 43, raises a slide 44 guided in the frame 2 of the machine, and swings an arm 45 upwardly on a rack shaft 46; and through an arm 47 and a link 48, this rock shaft actuates a lever 49, one end of which carries a lifting roller 50 under said rack 51, which rack is hinged in the usual manner on carriage 54. Raising the rack 51 disengages it from said pinion 52, and permits the carriage to be advanced freely by the spring barrel.
I provide a dotter key 31, and when this key and any tabulator key 12 have both been depressed, a driving train leading from the spring barrel 5 to the dotting type bar 28 is completed (see Fig. 5). This train comprises a gear 9, on spring barrel 5 which drives a pinion 8 rigidly mounted on a floating shaft 7 rotatably mounted in sleeve 36, and this shaft 7 carries a rigid bevel gear 38, which drives a bevel gear 37 on the side of the sleeve, as shown in Fig. 2. The bevel gear 37 is rigid with a gear 35, so that when the bevel gear 37 rotates, a pinion 23 meshing with the gear wheel 35 will be con tinuously rotated,
A crank disk 24 rigid with pinion 23, moves a lever or rocker 2G pivoted at 27, through link 25, and this lever 26 actuates my dotting type bar 28 and dotting type block 29 through pin 20 and slot 28. This type bar is conveniently mounted at the left of a segment 30, as indicated in Fig. 1. ll hen the carriage has been released by depressing a tabulator key, or by means of the usual releasing lever (not illustrated), it will be evident that as the carriage advances, the rotating spring barrel 5will actuate the dotting type-bar 28 through the gear train and will cause the type 29 to strike the paper repeatedly. The manner in which the dotter key controls this gear train will now be described. lVhen the dotting key 31 is depressed, it rocks upon its pivot, onarm 32 of bracket 3, and its inner end raises the gear wheel 35, by raising a pin 33 on which the rigid gears 35 and 37 are rotatablymounted. The inner end of this pin 33 is held in the side of the sleeve 36, passing through a guide slot 34 in an arm 22 of the bracket 3. In this way, the upper edge of the gear 35 is brought into engagement with the lower edge of the pinion 23. \Vhen the key 31 is released, a return spring 57 withdraws the gear 35, which opens the driving train at this point, the gear and pinion 23 thus constituting a clutch which is normally held open by the spring. The key 31 may be locked down by pushing it laterally under shoulder 40 in a comb 39$ The means by which any of the tabulating keys controls the meshing of the pinion 8 and gear wheel 9 will now be described: \Vhen one of the tabulating keys is depressed, its lever 12 rocks on its pivot 13 in bracket 14, and raises a universal bar or yoke 15 on its pivots 15 in said bracket 14 which latter is attached to the key lever bracket 14. Through a laterally projecting arm 18 and a link 19 attached to the end thereof, a lever 16 is raised, said lever being pivoted at 17 on lug 3 of bracket 3. The lever 16, operating through a pin 21 and slot 20, raises a slide 10 which passes through a guide slot 11 in bracket 3, as indicated in Fig. 3; and through the upper end of this slide, passes the hub 8 of the said pinion 8. As the slide rises, the hub 8" moves up in a guide slot 6, formed in an upwardly extending arm 4 of the bracket 3. and raises the pinion 8 into mesh with gear 9., \Vhen the key is released, the yoke 15 is returned by a return spring 41, and this Withdraws the pinion 8 from gear wheel 9 and opens the driving connection again at this point. This connection also constitutes a clutch normally held open by the spring 41. Return springs 42 are provided to return the individual levers 12.
It will be observed that the type 29 strikes only once for each entire revolution of the pinion 23, and that it requires substantially longer for said pinion 23 to complete a revolution than it does for the escapement wheel 52 to escape one tooth (corresponding to 'a single ordinary letter-feeding movement of the paper carriage 54). To explain this difference, it will be seen that the peripheral speed of gear 9 is about equal to the linear speed of the paper carriage 54, inasmuch as gear 9 is of nearly equal diameter to the drum that carries strap 53. In other words, the peripheral speed of gear 9 is about equal to that of pinion 52, which is directly connected to escapement wheel 52, usually having sixteen teeth. The standard extent of each letter-feeding movement of the carriage is one-tenth of an inch. The peripheral move ment of gear 9 and pinion 8 is therefore substantially one-tenth of an inch during a letter-feeding movement of the carriage.
, The peripheral movement of pinion 38 during a letter-feeding movement of the carriage is approximately one-tenth of an inch, as this pinion is about the same size as pinion 8. The peripheral movement of pinion 37 is the same as that of pinion 38. The peripheral movement of pinion 35 is about double that of pinion 37 (or of pinion 8). The peripheral movement of pinion 23 is the same as that of pinion 35. Hence the peripheral movement of pinion 23 is about one-fifth or not more than one-fourth of an inch (say one-third of its circumference) at each ordinary letter-feeding movement of the carriage. This pinion, during about three letter-feeding movements of the carriage, would be capable of making only a single revolution. Proportions may be varied within the scope of the invention, the advantage being that the carriage-driving spring has more time in which to drive the type than would be the case if the type struck once for every ordinary letter-feeding travel of the carriage, and hence can deliver a sufiiciently powerful type blow without the necessity of having a prohibitive tension on the carriage-driving spring.
The slot 20 is employed inlever 16 so as to effect a small amount of lost motion; this is necessary to give the gear wheel 35 a sufficiently small movement to bring it just into mesh with the pinion 23. The dotter type block 29 may have upper case and lower case types or characters to enable it to print either a dot or dash as desired. Instead of the dot or dash type, any other character desired may be employed. The bracket 3 is conveniently attached to frame 1 at the rear of the main frame 2, by a screw 1 passing through lug 3 of the bracket 3.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I tlaim:
1. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a paper carriage, a source of power, mechanism for writing a dotted line, an automatic driving connection from the source of power to said mechanism separate from the carriage, a tabulator key controlling said carriage, and means cooperating with said key for opening and closing said driving connection.
2. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a carriage, mechanism for writing dots, a gear train for driving said mechanism, a key for throwing said gear train into active relation, and a tabulator key for closing said gear train to drive said writing mechanism.
3. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a paper carriage, mechanism for writing dots, a gear train for driving said mechanism, and a pair of controlling keys, both of which must be depressed to close said gear train and effect a driving connection through said mechanism, and one of said keys being operable to control the forward run of the carriage.
4. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a paper carriage, mechanism for writing dots, a driving member arranged to move when the carriage moves, a driving train between said driving member and said mechanism, a dotter key for closing said driving train at one point, and a tabulator key for closing said driving train at another point. 7
5. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a type bar for writing dots, a crank disk, a connecting rod attached to said crank disk and connected with said type bar to actuate the same when said crank disk rotates, a carriage, and means for continuously rotating said crank disk when said carriage advances.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a type and a carriage, of means for driving said carriage, an interrupted train for causing said carriage to vibrate said type, a tabulator key, and a second key arranged when depressed simultaneously with said tubulator key to complete said interrupted train.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a type and a carriage, of means for driving said carriage, an interrupted train for causing said carriage to vibrate said type, a tabulator key, a second key arranged when depressed simultaneously with said tabulator key to complete said interrupted train, and means for locking said second key depressed.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a type and a carriage, of power means, a gear train to connect the power with the type for vibrating said type, a tabulator mechanism including a key, and a second key cooperating with the tabulator key for controlling the connection of said power to said type.
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a type and a carriage, of power means for vibrating said type, a tabulator key, and a second key arranged to permit said tabulator key to control the connection of said power to said type.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a vibrating type bar and a carriage, of a gear rotated when the carriage travels, a pitman positively driving said type bar back and forth, a second gear driving said pitman, and a key controlling a connection intermediate said gears.
11. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a type bar for writing dots, a gear train for driving said type bar, said train being broken at two points, and keys for making and breaking the train at said points respectively.
12. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a type bar for writing dots, a segment; supporting the same, a lever for actuating said type bar, a carriage, means for positively reciprocating said lever actuated when said carriage advances, a tabulator key controlling said carriage, gearing controlled by the tabulator key and through which ,said lever is driven, additional gearing through which said lever is driven, and a key controlling said additional gearing.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a type and a carriage, said type having a normal position of rest away from the printing point, of power means for vibrating said type, transmitting mechanism between the power means and the type for positively moving it to printing position at each vibration, a tabulator key, and a second key cooperating therewith to control said mechanism, said transmitting mechanism including means settable by said keys for causing said mechanism to be operative or inoperative to transmit power to the type.
14. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage and a motor to drive the carriage, of a type bar, mechanism forming a positive driving connection from the motor to the type bar to vibrate the type bar, each forward stroke of the type bar bein; effected by power transmitted from the motor through said driving connection during said stroke, escapementmechanism to control the movement of the carriage, a tabulator key, means operated thereby to release the carriage from the escapement mechanism, and means cooperating with the tabulator key to control the operation of the type-bar-vibrating mechanism.
15. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage, of a motor connected to drive the carriage, a tabulator key, a type bar, mechanism between the motor and the type bar to Vibrate the latter independently of the connections between the motor and carriage, and means cooperating with the tabulator key to control the operation of said vibrating mechanism.
16. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage, of a motor connected to drive the carriage, escapement mechanism controlling the letter feed of the carriage, a tabulator key, means operated thereby to release the carriage from said mechanism, a type bar, mechanism between the motor and the type bar to vibrate the latter independently of the connections between the motor and carriage, and means cooperating with the tabulator key to control the operation of said vibrating mechanism.
17. In a typewriting machine, the combi nation with a carriage, of a motor connected thereto, a type bar, a train of gearing from the motor to the type bar independent of the carriage, a tabulator key, and means cooperating with the tabulator key to control the operation of said train.
18. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a spring barrel connected thereto, a rack on the carriage, an escapement pinion in mesh with the rack, a type bar, gearing between the barrel and the type bar for vibrating the latter, a tabulator key, means operated thereby to lift the rack from the escapement pinion, and additional means cooperating with the tabulator key to control the operation of said gearing.
19. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, driving means therefor, tabulator keys, a type bar, mechanism to vibrate the type bar, a universal bar actuated by each of the tabulator keys, and means cooperating with the universal bar to control the operation of said vibrating mechanism.
20. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage, of a motor connected to drive the carriage, a tabulator key, a type bar, a train of gears leading from the motor to the type bar for vibrating the latter, said train comprising normally separated gears, and means operated by the tabulator key to connect certain of said gears.
21. In a typewriting machine, the combi nation with a type bar, of a motor, a train of gears between the motor and type bar to "ibrate the latter, said train being normally open at different points, a key'operable to connect the train at one of said points, and a tabulator key operable to connect the train at the other of said points.
22. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a type bar, of a motor, a train of gears between the motor and type bar to vibrate the latter, said train being normally open at different points, a key operable to connect the train at one of said points, a tabulator key operable to connect the train at the other of said points, and means to hold said first-named key in operative position.
28. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a type bar and a carriage, of power means to vibrate the type bar, a tabulator key, a second key arranged to permit the tabulator key to control the connection of said power to the type bar, and means to lock said second key in operative position.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a type, of a motor, mechanism connecting the motor to the type to vibrate the latter, keys controlling said mechanism and permitting the type to be vibrated only when both keys are depressed, and a device to lock one of the keys in its depressed position.
In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage, of a motor, a tabulator key, a type, mechanism to vibrate the type by power supplied from the motor, a second key cooperating with the tabulator key to permit the type to vibrate only when both said keys are depressed, and means to lock said second key in depressed position.
26. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage, of a power device to drive the carriage, a type, a train of gearing between the power device and type to vibrate the latter, normally separated gears in said train, a key operable to connect said separated gears when depressed, a device to hold the key depressed, a second key controlling the movement of the carriage-and also operable while said first-named key is depressed to control the vibration of said type.
27. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage, of a motor connected to drive the carriage, a type, mechanism to vibrate the type, said mechanism extending from the motor to the type independently of the connection between the motor and carriage, a key controlling the connection between the carriage and motor, and a second key operable in conjunction with the firstnamed key to control said type-vibrating mechanlsm.
28. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a spring barrel connected to drive the carriage, a vibrating type bar, a gear on said barrel, and a train of gearing from said gear to the type bar independent of the carriage for vibrating the type bar.
29. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a type bar, mechanism to vibrate the type bar, a motor, and independent driving connections from the motor the carriage and to said mechanism.
30. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a type bar, mechanism to vibrate the type bar, a motor, independent driving connections from the motor to the carriage and to said mechanism, a tabulator key, and a second key operable in conjunction with the tabulator key to control the vibration of the type bar.
31. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a power device to drive the carriage, a vibrating type, and a train of gears connecting the power device with said type imlependently of the carriage.
32. The combination in a typewriting machine, of a carriage, a type, means for vibrating the type, keys controlling said means, said means being operative only when both keys are depressed, and means to lock one key in depressed position.
33. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a motor, connections between the carriage and motor for driving the carriage in one direction, a type bar, and mechanism to transmit power from the motor to the type bar independently of the carriage when the motor is operated in a direction to drive the carriage, and reciprocate the type bar to and from the printing point by the power of the motor applied directly and positively to the type bar during its movements toward and from the printing point.
34. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a type bar, a motor, a normally open train of gearing between the motor and type bar for vibrating the latter, and a manual device for completing said train to cause the type bar to vibrate, said gearing operating positively to transmit power from the motor to the type bar when the. motor is operated, and vibrate the type bar by-the direct power of the motor applied thereto continuously during its vibration.
35. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a type bar, a lever connected thereto, a shaft, a pitman forming a driving connection between said shaft and, said lever, a carriage-driving motor, and a train of gears connecting the motor to said shaft.
36. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a motor to drive the carriage, escapement mechanism controlling the letter feedof the carriage, a type bar, and gearing from the motor to the type bar for vibrating the latter during the travel of the carriage, said vibrations being at intervals substantially greater than those of the ordinary letter space feed of the carriage.
37. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a paper carriage, a motor to drive the carriage, means to control the advance of the carriage and permit it to run forward a distance greater than a letter-space distance, a type bar having a normal position of rest away from the printing position, and means to repeatedly advance the type bar from said position of rest to the printing position and return the type bar during said forward run of the carriage, said last-mentioned means having a driving connection with the motor independent of the carriage whereby the type bar is positively advanced by the power of the motor applied thereto during said advance.
38. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a paper carriage, a gear wheel arranged to rotate when said carriage advances, mechanism for writing dots, a gear train for actuating said mechanism from said gear wheel, said train normally open at different points, and keys for closing the gear train and controlling the advance of the carriage.
39. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a paper carriage, mechanism for writing a dotted line, an automatic driving connection for said mechanism, a tabulator key controlling said carriage, and opening and closing said driving connection at one point, and a separate key for opening and closing said driving connection at another point.
40. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a carriage, a motor, mechanism for writing dots, a gear train for transmitting power from the motor to said mechanism to drive the latter, said gear train normally disconnected from the motor and said mechanism, a key for connecting said gear train with said mechanism, and a tabulator key for connecting said gear train with the motor to drive said writing mechanism.
41. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a paper carriage, mechanism for writing dots, a driving member arranged to move when the carriage moves, a driving train between said driving member and said mechanism, a dotter key for closing said driving train at one point, and a tabulator key for closing said driving train at another oint.
42. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a paper carriage, a spring barrel connected therewith to advance the same, a dotting .type bar, a driving train from said .spring barrel for actuating said type bar,
said train disconnected from the spring barrel and type bar, a key for connectmg the train to the spring barrel, and a key for connecting the train to the type bar.
43. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a type bar for writing dots, a gear train for driving said type bar, and keys individually operable to open and close said train at separate points.
44. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a carriage, a motor to drive the carriage, a type bar, mechanism for positively driving said type bar in its forward striking movement by power transmitted from said motor to the type bar independently of the carriage during said striking movement as the carriage advances, and key-actuated means for controlling the operation of said mechanism.
15. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a type-bar for writing dots, a crank disk, a connecting rod attached to said crank disk and connected with said type-bar to actuate the same when said crank disk rotates, a carriage, and means for continuously rotating said crank disk when said carriage advances.
46. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a type bar for writing dots, a segment supporting the same, a lever for actuating said type bar, a carriage, a gear train for positively reciprocating said lever when the carriage advances, said train incomplete at ditt'erent points, a tabulator key controlling said carriage and operable to complete the train at one of said points, and a key to complete the train at the other of said points.
47. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a type and a carriage, of means for driving said carriage, an interrupted train for causing said carriage driving means to vibrate said type, a tabulator key, and a second key arranged when depressed simultaneously with said tabulator key to complete said interrupted train.
48. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a type and a carriage, of means for driving said carriage, an interrupted train for causing said carriage driving means to vibrate said type, a tabulator key, a second key arranged when depressed simultaneously with said tabulator key to complete said interrupted train, and means for locking said second key depressed.
49. In a typewriting machine, the combi nation with a type and a carriage, of power means independent of the carriage for positively vibrating said type from its normal position of rest to the printing point repeatedly during a continuous run of the carriage, a tabulator key, and means cooperating therewith for connecting said power means to said type.
50. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a vibrating type-bar, a carriage and means to drive the carriage, of a gear rotated by said carriage-driving means, a pitman positively driving said type-bar back and forth, a second gear driving said pitman, and a key controlling a clutch intermediate said gears.
51. The combination with a paper carriage and a motor to drive the carriage, of a line-making type bar having a plurality of different types to produce different characters of lines, and a train of gears from the motor to the type bar positively driven by said motor to produce a continuous vibrating movement of said bar during a longi tudinal movement of the carriage in letterfecd direction.
52. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage, of a motor connected to drive the carriage, a tabulator key, a type bar, a train of gears leading from the motor to the platen, for enabling the motor to vibrate the type bar, said train comprising a pair of gears normally separated, and means operated by the tabulator key to connect the gears in said pair.
53. In a typcwriting machine, the combination with a carriage, of a motor connected to drive the carriage, a tabulator key, a type bar, a train of gears between the motor and type bar for vibrating the type bar, said train comprising gears normally separated from the motor and type bar, means operated by the tabulator key to connect said gears to the type bar, and a key operable to connect the gears to the motor, whereby the type bar is vibrated when both keys are operated, and the type bar and gear train remain at rest when the tabulator key alone is operated.
