T he type-keys V1 are mounted on levers 2 Y fulcrumed on a rod 3 and connected by bellcranks 4 Vto the type-bars 5 which are fulcrumed on a rod 6 and adapted to be thrown upward to bring the types 7 to the printing position in front of the platen S'. The platen frame 9 is mounted on a traveling carriage 10 operated in the usual manner by a spring drum 10d connected through a band 10b to the carriage. The travel of the carriage rotatesy an escapement wheel 11 and a pinion 12 in mesh with a rack bar 13 on the carriage. 'The rack bar may be supported on a swinging frame 14 pivoted at 15 and operable by a finger 1G to lift the rack bar free from the pinion 12. rThe letter-feed movementof the carriage is controlled by escapement dogs 17 cooperating with the escapement wheel 11 and actuated by a projection 13 on a universal bar frame 19 comprising a universal barv 20. The latter is positioned and adapted to be operated in the usual manner by shoulders 21 on the type-bars. The
lplaten is shiftable to upper and lower case positions by means of a shift rail 22 on which runs a roller 23 on the platen frame. The shift rail is mounted on uprights 24 connected at their lower ends to levers 25 fixed to a rock shaft 26 and adapted to be actuated by shift key levers (not shown).
rJ'he invention provides means for selec-V tively feeding and vibrating two separate ribbons, which are preferably of different colors, as for example, black and red. One of these ribbons r, which for convenience will be referred to as the red ribbon, is mounted on an inner pair of ribbon spools 27 and y28,an'd the other ribbon o, which will gears for selectively drivingbe referred to as the black ribbon, on an outer pair of spools 29 and 30.v The ribbons extend through ribbon vibrators 31 and 32 which are located in front of the platen and are Vadapted to be vibrated upward to bring a ribbon over the printing point each time a type-bar is actuated. Each of these vibrators comprises a pair of eyes 33 forming a guide through which the ribbon is threaded7 a body portion with a vertical slot 34, and depending vertical arms 35 by means of which the vibrator is slidably mounted and guided in a frame 36.
The vibrators 31 and 32 are both slidable up and down in the frame 36 to selectively bring them to operative position in the frame. A three-arm lever 37 interposed between the vibrators is provided with pins or projections 3S which enter notches 39 and 40 in the vibrators 31 and 32 respectively.
rlhe lever 37 is mounted on a pivot pin 41 which extends through the slots 34. Also connected to the pivot pin 41 is a depending arm pr vided with an arc-shaped slot concentric with the pin 41 and in which is guided a pin 44 on the lever 37.
Vtith the parts in the position shown in Fig. 11, the vibrator 32 is held in its lowered or inactive position while the vibrator 31 is in operative position, so that it may beV vibrated over the printing point by Vmechanism presently to be described. The
lever 37 is movable about its fulcrum 41 to carry the pin 44 from the Fig. 11 position to the opposite end of the slot 43 (Fig. 14), thereby moving the vibrator 31 downward to inactive position and lifting the vibrator 32 into operative position. The means for shifting the lever 37 will be described later. It will be noted that the two vibrators, together with the intermediate lever 37 and the arm 42, are adapted'to be moved up and down as a unit, independent movement of these parts being prevented except through the shifting of the lever 37. The actuating means for vibrating this unit comprises a vibrator lever 45 in the form of a bell crank pivoted at 46 and having a forwardly eX- tending arm connected at 47 to the lower end ofthe arm 42, so that when the lever 45 is vibrated the vibrators are moved up and down. An upwardly extending arm 43 of said lever carries a wrist pin 49 working in a vertical slot provided in a depending bracket arm 50 on the universal bar frame 19. When a type bar is actuated, the universal bar frame is moved rearwardly, and through the lever 45 moves the ribbon vibrators upward, to bring the uppermost or operative vibrator over the printing point so that the type will strike through the ribbon onto the work-sheet. rlhe operating lever 45 is mounted on a frame 51 which is adapted to be shifted up and down with the platen. rlhis frame carries at its lower end seY a roller 52 seated in the bifurcated end of a rock arm 53 fixed to the rock shaft 26 so that when a shift key is depressed to rock the shaft 26 and lift theshift rail 22, the frame 51 is also lifted, said frame being guided on a stationary vertical rod 54. It will thus be seen that when the platen is shifted fromy lower caseposition (Fig. 2) to upper case position (Fig. 3), the vibrators are also shifted vso that their position relative 'to the platen is substantially unchanged; rlhe frame 51'is provided with an upwardly ex,y tending arm having aslot 55 to receive av ledge 56 on the frame 36 so that lthe latter is shifted up and down with the vibrators. On said frame 36 is mounted a card holder 57 which may be made of wire and suitably` shaped to hold a card in printing position on the platen. As the card holder 57 is shiftable with the platen, the danger of the card or work-piece being pulled out of position as the platen is shifted, is avoided.
. The means for selectively shifting the `ribbon vibrators to operative position will now be described. A ribbon key 58 which, in the form of the invention shown, is
located near the right-hand end lof the machine, is mounted on a lever 59' fulcrumed at 3 and connected through an arm 60 to a plate or draw-bar 61 formed with a vertical slot 62 through which extends a rock shaft 63. Fixed to the rock shaft is a sleeve 64 from which extend arms 65carrying pins 66 in positionv to be actuated by apawl- 67 in the form of an inverted V pivoted at 6 8 to the draw-bar 61. The end of each arm of the member 67 is somewhat conca-ve, or
formed with a notch 69 which prevents saidV ribbon key 58 is repeatedly depressed. For.
example, as indicated in Fig. 8, the ribbon key has been depressed and the shaft 63 rockedin a clockwise direction to bring the right-hand arm 65 to av substantially horizontal position, vand the left-hand arm 65 to an upwardly-inclined position. TvVhen -the key has beenv released the pawl 67 is moved upward, and upon the next succeeding depression of the key the left-hand pin 66 will be engaged by the corresponding arm of the pawl 67. The cam surface 69 on the lefthand arm of the pawl when it engages the pin 66, swings the pawl tothe left suiiciently to clear the right-hand pin 66, and a continued downward movement of the pawl 67 rocks the shaft 63 in a counterf clockwise direction. When the ribbon key Vis again depressed, the right-hand pin 6 6 will again be engagedby the pawl -67 and Vthe rock shaft 63 returned to the Fig. 8 position. Fixed to the rear end of the rock shaft 63 is an arm 7 0 carrying a wrist-pin 71 which works in a slot 72 in the lower end of a lever 73 connected by a pivot pin 74 to a` bracket or support 7 4ZL on the machine frame.
The pivot 74 may extend through a slot '7 5 in the arm 70 to permit said arm to swing.

As shown in Fig. ll, the vibrator 3l and the black ribbon b are in operative position, the red ribbon 7' being silenced. To reverse the vibrators, the ribbon key 58 is depressed carrying with it the pawl 67, and the left` hand arm of said pawl, as viewed in Fig. 11, engages its pin 66 a'nd rocks the shaft 63 to the left, thereby swinging the lower endV of the rock arm 7 0 to the right as shown/in Fig. 14. Thismovement of the arm 70 rocks the'lever 7 3 about its pivot 74 and moves the slide 76 to the left v(Fig. 14), thereby rocking the three-armed lever 37 from .therFig 1l position to the Fig. 14 position, thus reversing the vibrators and bringing the vi-A brator 32 and the red ribbon to active position. The two ribbons may both be silenced by rocking the shaft 63 to an intermediate position, which is preferably done by means loc of a lever 80 connected by a pivot 81 to a stationary arm 82. The lever 80V carries a pin 83 which, when thelever is moved to the left from Fig. 4 position to Fig. 7 position, en-
gages a cam arm 84iixed to the sleeve64,
and thereby cams the sleeve and with it the shaft 63 to an intermediate position. The
vibrators are thus brought to an intermedier ate position sozthat when the type-bars are operated, neither ribbon is .lifted high4 enough to, ,cover the printing point.- The' slide 76 isyieldingly held in any one of its three positions of adjustment by a springdetentv 85 (F ig. 15),.the end of which engages notches 86 positioned Vto correspond with thek different adjustments of the vibrators.- Theribbon spools are removablyV mounted on spindles 87 to which are secured gears 88, 89, 90 and 91. Between the gears 88 and 90 isv a driving pinion 92 mounted on the upper end of va vertical shaft 93 journaled in a swinging standard or support 94connected at its lower end byV a pivot 95 to a stationary support. On kthe lower kend of the shaft .93 is a beveled pinion 96 adapted to'mesh with a gear 97 on a horizontal shaft 98. Between the gears 89 and 91,
. shaft 108 is a gear 110 in mesh with a pinion 111k driven by a gear wheel 112, which is preferably fixed to the spring drum 10n which drives the carriage.` The pinion 111 is carried on an arm of a lever 113 mounted on the shaft 114 of the spring drum and having a projection 115 extending over the rack bari13. The pinion 111 is in rolling contact with the gear 112 and when the rack bar 13 1 is lifted out of mesh with the escapement pinion 12, either by the release key 16 or by the operation of one of the ytabulator keys, which may be employed and which may be connected in the usual manner to lift the carriage rack 13, the pinion 111 is moved away from the gear 110 and thereby diseonnects the ribbon feed mechanism from the shiftable pinions 92 and 99 are in engagement with the gears 90 and 91 for the outer or black ribbon spools, so that the black ribbon will be fed during the letter-feed travel of the carriage. Said pinions 92 and 99 are shiftable into mesh with the inner gears 88 and 89 for the red ribbon spools by the following mechanism: A bar 116 is connected at one' end by a. pivot 117 to the swinging frame 94, the opposite end of said bar vbeing connected by a pivot 118 to a. lever 119 loosely mounted on the shaft 63, the upper end of said lever being connected through a link 120 to the swinging frame 101. The bar 116 has an offset arm 121 pivoted to a. rock arm 122 fixed to the rock shaft 63. -When the shaft 63 is rocked by operating the ribbon key, the bar 116, with the connections just described, is moved to the right (Fig. 4), thereby moving the swinging frame 94 to the right, and moving the pinion 92 into mesh with the gear 8,87 The movement of the bar 116 to the right also `operates through the lever 119 and link 120 to move the pinion 99 into mesh with the gear 89. It will be seen that the depression of the ribbon key operates to simultaneously reverse the ribbon vibrators and transfer the ribbon feed drive from one set of spools to the other so that the ribbon which is being fed will always correspond to the vibrator which is in active position. r1`he gear 110 is carried by a sleeve 123 loose on the shaft 108. A disk or flangey 124 on said sleeve carries a pawl 125, which drives av ratchet 126 secured to the shaft 108, aoneway driving connection thereby being provided between the carriage driving spring and the shaft 108, so that during the return of the carriage, the pawl 125 rides idly over the ratchet 126 and the ribbons remain stationary. A gravity pawl 127 coperating with a ratchet 128 on the shaft 108, locks aid shaft against backward rotation.
The gears on the ribbon spool spindles, when disconnected from the driving mechanism, are locked against rotation in eithe direction by dogs 148,. (see Fig. 5) on a swinging frame 149 pivoted at 150 and operated by a pin 151 on the frame 94; said pin extending through an opening in the frame 149. lfilien the pinion 92 is in mesh with the gear 88, the left-hand dog 148 locks the gear 90, and when the pinion 92 is swung into engagement with the gear 90, the frame 149 is reversed to lock the gear 88 and release the gear 90. A similar locking device is provided in connection withY the gears 89 and 91. lhen the lever 80 is moved to the leftV (Fig. 7) to silence the ribbon vibrators, the ribbon feed mechanismis also silenced by means Vof a pin 129 on the lever 80 riding on a cam 130011 a lever 131 and thereby swinging the latter on its pivot 132 and liftingthe forward end of the shaft 108 to separate the gears 105 and 109. The shaft 98 is shiftable longitudinally to bring it into dri'v. connection with either of the upright shafts 93, 100, to control the direction in which the active ribbon is fed, and is yieldingly held in either position to which it may be shifted by a beveled disk 133 which moves with the shaft to either side of a holding disk 134 on a lever 135 pivoted at 136 and held by a` spring 137 in contact with the disk 133.
The shaft 98 may be shifted by a` hand crank 138 fixed on the end of theshaft, and which may also be used for winding the ribbons by hand. Mechanism for automatically reversing the feed of either ribbon is provided as follows: Near each end of the shaft 98 is an arm 139 pivoted at 140 and provided at its upper end with slits or eyes 141 through which the ibbons are threaded. @n the lower end of the arm 139 is a detent 142 adapted to be swung into engagement with a toothed wheel or disk 143 loose on the shaft 98. On the outer face ofI the wheel .43 are cams 144 cooperating with correspondingly shaped cams 145 having a xed completed, a button 147 engages an arm'l39 adjacent the empty spool and swings said arm inward to bring. thedetent 142 against rEhe disk being thus. heldV is, the empty spool is inow connected to the shaft 9S and the other spool is released. As
both of the ribbons are guided through the Y same reversing arms 139, the same mechanism *serves vto reverse the feed of either ribbon. The escapement mechanism is operated from ,the space bar 152, as shown inA F ig. 10, through the medium of a rock shaft 153, rock arm 154, link 15,5 and slide 156. 0n said slide is an offset 157 which swings the frame carrying the escapeinent dogsj 17, when the space bar is depressed. lt'will be noted thatlthe ribbon vibrators are not actuated by the space bar.
