Be it known thatI, FRANK C. URsBRUoK, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county of New York and State of New ,York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ty e- Writing Machines, of which the following is aspecification.

'One of the objects of the present improvements is tov overcome this difficulty; and to this end I eflI'ect a separation of the ribbons when capital letters are being printed, so that one ribbon cannot press against the other. The separation is efiected byaspring or spring-finger which presses down the carrier of the idle ribbon. When the lower-case letters are being written, there is no danger of color offsetting from one ribbon to the other, because the lower case types are beneath the capital types (when in printing positions), and the capital types do not then strike or press the idle ribbon. When the platen is shifted up to enable the capital types to print, said spring or finger becomes effective to hold or pull down the'carrier of the idle ribbon, so that the latter will clear the active ribbon. Said finger is pivoted upon the platen shift rail and bears against the lever of either idle ribbon carrier, to throw the idle ribbon-down past itsnormal position of rest,'(the platen being in upper case position) so that the active ribbon when vibrated 'to cover the printing point,]will clear the idle ribbon.
Another feature of the invention comprises an improvement on the mechanism to prevent accidental feeding of the idle ribbon, disclosed in United States Letters Pat.- ent to J. G. McLaughlin granted June 22, 1909, No. 926,014=,-wherein arms connected to the ribbon shifting mechanism have fingers which are moved into engagement with the idle spools, or parts connected thereto,

The front ribbon caprier 13 (Fig. 18) may be formed of sheet metal. and has a head ends of the eyes to prevent accidental disengagement of the ribbon and carrier when the latter is vibrated. The outer ends of the arms 16 carry upwardly projecting guard prongs 21, which may be offset forwardly away from the rear ribbon, the forward ribbon passing in front of said prongs, whereby it is positively held separated from the rear ribbon, the prongs forming with the horns 17, a pair of open eyes flankingthe closed eyes. The upper ends of the guard prongs 21, which project above the head have forwardly bent lips 22 to shunt the lower edge of the rear ribbon behind and clear of the upper edge of the forward ribbon when the ribbons are vibrated. The

In this class of machines, either ribbon carrier 10 or 13 is caused to cover the printing point at each type stroke, by any type bar 2, which, when swung to the platen, presses rearwardly universal bar 23 forming part of a movable frame A ribbonvlbrat-ing yoke 01' connector 25 is shiltably supported on a bracket 26 on the universal bar frame 24; said connector having slotted ears 27 28, to engage respectively the progecting Wrists 29, carried by ribbon- vibratmg levers 31, 32, said ears being spaced apart to free one wrist from its adjacent ear when the remaining ear is engaged with the wrist on the opposite lover. The levers are pivot ed intermediate their ends at 33, to the usual bracket 34 on the platen shift rail (5, to shift with the platen the latter is thrown from lower to upper case position; said levers be ing pivotally connected at their orward ends at 35, to their respective IllJDOli curriers l0 and 13. When one of the cars 27 or 28 has been shifted to engage the adjacent wrist 29 or 30 (Figs. 10 and 11) of the ribbon-carrying levers 31., 32, the vibration of the actuator 23, 24 will rock the lever or 32 on its pivot 33 to cause the ribbon vibrator 10 or 13 to cover the printing point. The connector is shifted relatively to the wrists 29, 30 by a cross arm 36 hearing keys 3?, 37 and intermediate its ends to a rock shaft 38 iournaled in. the frame and having an arm 39 pivoted to a second arm 40 carried by a link a1 fastened at 42, to the connector 25 (Figs. 5 and 11).

The'frame 47 its between the slotted ears 28, 29 of the connector, 25, so as to be shifted therewith, and as one ear' engages the wrist on one ribbomcarrying lever to connect it with the actuator 24, the spring-finger 43 slips off of said lever and onto the adjacent, disconnected lever, the free end of the finger being rounded, as at 52, to enable it to slide over the edges of the levers which are beveled as at 53, so that the finger will not catch there- 'against, if the levers are not lying inalinenient. When the platen shift rail 6 .is in lower case position, the ribbon-vibrating ievers l, 32, lie against a stop 44 on the frame, (Fig. 3). When the platen is shifted to upper case position, both vibrating levers are shifted away from the stop, but the pressure of the spring finger 43 against the idle lever turns it on its pivot 33, and as a resuit the idle ribbon-carrier is prevented from having as great an upward movement as the active ribbon-carrier. The idle carrier is thus caused to lie below the active carrier, when thetwoare at rest in' upper case position, (Fig. 17,) and the active carrier,
ribbon past .the upper edge of the idle rib bon, so that the two ribbons do'not overlap, and hence smudg'ing of ink from one ribbon onto the other (due to the lower case types pressing the. ribbons together) is avoided. The pressure of the spring-finger against the idle ribbon-vibrating lever, when the parts are shifted to upper case position, throws the wrist of such lever out of register with the slot in the co-acting car on the connector (Figs. 3, 4, 6 and 8). The idle lever is arrested by one of two opposite stops 54 on .the frame 47.. Said stops preferably have inclined or cam faces and as the connector is shifted from side to side, said cam faces alternately engage the -wrists of the respective levers (when idle) to restore the wrists to register with the slots in the cars, such return taking place while the ear is movingtoward its wrist. Thus, each wrist is guided into its slot.
The pairs of ribbon spools 8 and 11 are mounted onupright shafts 55, journaled in frames and having gears 57 fast thereon. the spool gears 57, on one side 0! gears 57 of the inner spools 11, to wind the of idle spool gears,
the machine is a Winding gear 58, fast on an upright shaft 59, turned by a bevel gear 60 constantly in mesh with a bevel gear 61 on a drive shaft 62. The shaft 59 is journaled in cars 63 carried by a rocking lever 64 pivoted at its lower end at 65; The shaft 59 and rocking lever 64 with their cooperating parts, are duplicated onthe opposite side of the machine, the rocking levers being operated by a lever 65 mounted on the rock shaft 38 controlling the ribbon shifting mechanism, said lever having a link 66 connecting its lower end with the left hand rocking lever 64, its upper-end being con-Y nected by a link 67 with the'right hand rocking lever. When the rocking levers are swung toward each other bythe operation of the cross arm 36 on the rocking shaft 38 (Fig. 13), the winding gears '58, (as seeforth in said patent) are meshed with the front ribbon 4; and when the rocking levers are shifted away from each other, they mesh the gears 58 with the spool gears 57 of theouter spools 8, to wind the rear ribbon 3. Upon each rocking lever '64 are secured oppositely extending arms 68 terminating in fingers 69, to operate latches'Zl which thereby are caused to alternately lock the'pairs of ribbon spools 8 and 11. Said latches are pivoted at 72 tothe'frames 56, op osite each spool gear 57, to rock substantially radially into and out of mesh with the teeth of said cars, so that the latter will not be turned y the engagement of the latches with or their disengagement from the gears. The arms 68 vi rate in a plane transversely to the: plane' in which the latches rock, necessi- {tatingfa loose connection between the arms when vibrated, shifts the lower edge of its;
and latches. Such connection may be, simply efiected'by providing the latcheswith slots or recesses 70,v in which-the fingers 69 of the arms are acdommodated. When the I levers 64 are. rocked. to mesh the :winding 4 gears '58 with one or the other pair of spool gears 57,'the,ar1r.s onejof the latches of each and to, disengage the remaining latch of each pair from the pair of active spool gears, whereby the inner spool gears are in use,- the outer spool gears are locked against turning, and vice versa.

claim:
1. In a 'typewriting machine,
including a platen shiftable fi'om lower to' P e c position and vice versa, the com ination with a ribbon mechanism including'a of ribbon carriers, levers connectedthereto, an actuator, and a shiftableconnector to couple either leverseparately with the acttiator', the layers shiftable with the pitch,
connector to engage and depress the idle lever and its carrier when the parts are in upper case position.
In a typewriting machine, including a platen shift-able from lower to upper case position and vice versa, the combination with a ribbon mechanism including a pair of ribbon carriers, levers connected thereto, an actuator, and a shiftable connector to couple either lever separately with the actuator, the levers shiftable with the platen, of means to engage and depress the idle lever and its carrier when the parts are in upper case position.
3. In a typewriting machine, including a platen shiftable from lower to upper case position and vice versa, the combination with a ribbon mechanism including a pair of ribbon carriers, levers connected thereto, an actuator, and a shiftable connector to couple either lever separately with the actuator, the levers shiftable' with the platen, of a spring-finger .to effect the detrusion of the idle ribbon carrier below the active rib-- bon carrier when the parts are in upper case position.
4:. The combination with a ribbon mechanism including a pair of ribbon vibrators, pivotally supported levers coupled to the respective vibrators, an actuator vibrating at each type stroke, and a shiftable connector having slotted ears to engage wrists on the respective levers to couple either lever separately to the actuator, of a shiftably supported frame embraced between and shifted by he ears, and a yielding-finger pivoted to the frame to engage and depress either lever when idle to bring the idle ribbon below the active ribbon.
In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen shiftable to either of two positions by a platen shift rail, and a ribbon mechanism including a pair of ribbon carriers or vibrators, levers coupled to the respective vibrators and pivotally supported. by the platen shift rail to shift therewith, an actuator vibrating at each type stroke, and a shiftable connector to couple either lever separately to the actuator, of a finger shiftable with the connector to throw either vibrator lever to inactive position when the platen is in upper case position, and means to return the lever to position to be engaged by the connector when said lever is to be coupled to the actuator.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combi nation with a platen shiftable to either i two positions by a platen shiftv rail, and a ribbon mechanism including a pair of ribbon carriers or vibrators, levers coupled to the respective vibrators and pivotally sup ported by the platen shift rail to shift therewith, Wrists on the levers, an actuat r vibrating at each type stroke, and a sh "table connector having slotted ears to engage the wrist on either lever to couple it to the actuator, leaving the other lever idle, of a shiftable yielding finger to throw the idle lever to inactive position below the active lever when the platen is in upper case position, thereby throwing the wrist on said lever out of alinement with the slot in its co-acting ear, and cams shiftable with the connector and leading to the slots in therespcctive ears thereof, to return the wrists of the idle lever to position to be engaged by its slotted car when said lever is to be coupled to the actuator.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combinationwith a platen shiftable to either of two positions by a platen shift rail, and a ribbon mechanism including a pair of ribbon carriers or vibrators, levers'coupled to the respective vibrators and pivotally supported by the platen shift rail to shift therewith, wrists on the levers, an actuator vibrating at each type stroke, and a shiftable connector having slotted ears to engage the wrist on either lever to couple it to the ac tuator, leaving the other lever idle, of a shiftable yielding finger to throw the idle lever to inactive position below the active lever when the platen is in upper case position, thereby throwing the wrist on said lever out of alincment with the slot in its co-act-ing car, and a shiftable stop for each lever to arrest the throw thereof caused by the pressure of the said finger, and effective to return the idle lever so that its wrist may be engaged by its co-acting ear.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen shiftable to either of two positions by a platen shiftrail, and a ribbon mechanism including a pair of rib bon carriers or vibrators, levers coupled to the respective vibrators and pivot-ally supported by the platen shift rail to shift therewith, wists on the, levers, an actuator vibrating at each type stroke, and a shiftable connector having slotted ears to engage the wrist on either lever to couple it to the actuator, leaving the other lever idle, of a bracket on the platen shift rail, a frame mounted to shift on the bracket withthe connector, a yielding finger carried by the frame to effect a separation of the ribbons, when vibrated, at the time when the platen is in upper case position, and cam faces supported by the frame to arrest the idle lever and to return it to position to be engaged by its slotted car when the frame is shifted.
9. 111a typewi machine, the combination with a platen iiftable to either of two positions by a platen shift rail, and a ribbon mechanism including a pair of boncarriers or v'arators, levers coupled. to the respective vibrators, and pivotally supported by the platen shift rail to shift thereplcd with key-controlled means to shift the idle leverand its carrier relatively to the active lever and its carrier when the platen is in npper ease position, to effect a separationof the ribbons when the active carrier is vibrated, and means to limit the throw ofthe idle le-' ver, and to restore it to position to be couthe actuator when the connector shifted.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen s ift-able to either of two positions by a platen shift rail, and a ribb'onmechanism including a pair of ribbon carriers or vibrators, levers coupled to the respective vibrators, and pivotally supported by the platen shift rail to shift therestroke, and a shiftable connector to couple either lever separately to the actuator, of key controlled means toshift the idle lever and its carrier relatively to the active lever and its carrier when the platen is in u per case position, to effect a separation of the ribbons when the active carrier is vibrated, and a cam face for each lever to limit its throw when in idle position and to return it to be coupled with the actuator when the connector is shifted 11. Ina typewriting machine, the combination with a ribbon mechanism including vibratory ribbon carriers, means to effect the vibration of either ribbon carrier separately, means to throw either carrier when; idle to an inefiective position, whereby when the platen is in upper case'oosition, the active ribbon will be vibrated past the idle ribbon, one of said carriers having a head with a. type opening therein, horns co-acting with the head to form eyeson opposite sides oft-he type opening, means to close the eyes against the accidental disengagement of the ribbon therefrom, guard prongs oifset from the horns, in front of which the front ribbon passes to separate it from the rear ribbon,
the upper ends of the prongs being bent for- .Wardly over the upper edge of the ribbon to prevent the lower edge of the reap ribbon. from engaging the upper edge of said frontribbon" when the rear carrier is vibrated.
16. In a typewriting machine, a ribbon vibrator or guide comprising a head having a type opening therein, eyes locatedon opposite sidesof the opening, means to prevent v the disengagement of the ribbon from the eyes during its vibration, and open eyes flanking the closed eves to enable the ribbon to be threaded through the vibrator to lie in 1 5 front thereof. 17. In a typewriting machine, ,aribbon carrier comprising a head having a type opening, horns projecting upwardly beside the head to form eyes, the upper ends of the horns being bent forwardlyto. facilitate the entrance of the ribbon, fingers closing the upper ends of the eyes against the accidental disengagementof the ribbon'therefrom, and flanges on the horns overlapping the head to 5 18.
