The invention relates primarily to typewriting machines, and has as its principal object the provision of-a construction and the arrangement of certain portions of the structure and particularly the type bars and actuating mechanism so that a machine of this character may be produced having the compactness of a collapsible machine and all of the advantages of a machine of standard dimension.
It is therefore an object of the invention to arrange the type bar and certain portions of the mechanism for actuating it so that one will assume practically ahorizontal relation to the other and furthermore, to arrange the pivots thereof so that the pivot of one is in substantial horizontal alignment with the pivot of the other.
It is another feature of the invention to arrange the pivots for the type bar and said portion of the actuating mechanism so that the pivot of oneof sa1d elements 1s arranged or located adjacent the free end of the other element, to provide one of said elements with a means which cooperates with the other to transmit the motion of the key lever to the type bar and to provide said last mentioned means upon the free end of one of said elements and the pivoted end of the other.
It is an additional object of the invention to rovide the type bar lever with a means winch cooperates with the means for trans mitting the motion of said lever to the type bar which will aii'ord a rolling contact between said means provided upon the type bar lever and said second mentioned means.
it is a further object to provide the key lever and the means for actuating the type bar witha means whereby the key lever may be releasably locked with relation to said means.
The invention has these and other objects all of which will be explained and more readily understood from the following explanation and reference to the drawings which illustrate one embodiment of which the invention is susceptible, it being manifest that other arrangements may be resorted to for accomplishing the invention, without de- 1924. nection employed between the key lever and the type bar actuating mechanism.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings contemplates the use of a key lever 10, a type bar 11, and a type bar actuating mechanism which is generally designated 12.v The construction of each of the type bar actuating mechanisms and the key lever being identical with each other, an explanation of one will sufiice for an understanding of all. The key lever 10 is pivoted at 13-to a frame 14 and is provided with a lug 15 to which one end of a coil spring 16 is attached, the opposite end of the spring being secured to a stationary portion or frame 17, the latter of which is arranged so that the action of the spring 16 will tend to maintain the key lever 10 in its upper position, yet will permit the key to be depressed-to actuate the type bar lever 11. The key lever 10 is further provided with an upwardly extending arm 18, which has its uppermost extremity bent laterally as indicated at 19 and clearly shown in Fig. 3. The laterally projecting portion 19 is further provided with an upwardly extending lip 20 and a rounded portion 21, the latter of which is designed to operate in and along a slot 22 provided in the arm 23 which is part of the type bar actuating mechanism.
The projection 20 accidental removal or disassociation of the key lever from the type bar actuating lever 23, the rounded portion 21 providing a means for afiording a rolling and variable contact between the part 21 and the walls of the is provided to prevent permit the extension 20 to be arranged in the manner shown in Fig. 3 and to allow the key lever 10 to be removed from its associated relation with the type bar actuating lever.
This type bar lever 23 is pivoted at 24a, which it will be noted is in substantial hori zontal alignment with the pivot 25 of the type bar 11 which will thus allow a more compact structure to be produced. The end of the type bar actuating lever 23 remote from the pivot 24a is provided with a rack 26 which engages with a toothed portion 27 provided upon an end of the type bar 11. It will be noted that the type bar actuating lever 23 is curved downwardly as indicated at 28 and that the adjacent end of the type bar 11 is correspondingly shaped so that the latter may be located in the curved portion 28 of the lever 23, which also cooperates toward the construction of a compact device.
From the foregoing explanation of the structure it is manifest that when any one of the various key levers 10 is actuated, the lever 23 will be moved to printing position, the relative position of these. parts being shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the draw- 1n y referring to Fig. 2, it will be noted that the connections between the key bar levers 10 and the levers 23 are offset with relation to each other,=which also assists in the produc-' tion of a compact construction. It will also be evident that the type bar is pivoted at one end and the connection between it and its actuating lever 23 is arranged at the pivot of the type bar with the pivot of the lever 23 duction of which as before stated is an object of the invention. The lever 23 is provided with a projection 29 which is deslgned to engage and actuate a ribbon shift mechanism 30, and to also actuate the carriage escapement mechanism 31 as shown in full and dotted lines in Fig. 1. This last named feature forms the subject matter of my Patent No. 1,702,938, dated Feb. 19, 1929.
From the foregoing description, it is manifest that an arrangement is provided in which the pivot of the type bar lever and the pivot of the type bar actuating lever are arranged in substantially horizontal align-- ment with each other. Also that the type bar extendsin one direction from its pivot and the lever 23 is extended towards the pivot of the type bar 11. In other words, these two elements extend in opposite directions, the free end of one being provided with ameans which cooperates with the pivoted end of the other to cause the actuation of the type bar. It is further evident that these two levers are arranged and designed to provide compactness and that the key bar actuating lever 23 is provided with part of a means whereby the key lever is detachably yet securely held with relation to the lever 23.
From the foregoing explanation of the structure, it will also be evident that the mechanism herein illustrated for accomplishing the invention is devoid of the usual links, arms, and multitude of pivoted elements usually employed for providing an operative connection between the key lever and the type bar.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim and desire to cover by Letters Patent is 1. In a typewriter type bar actuating mechanism the combination of a key lever, a pivoted type bar and pivoted means operable by the key lever for actuating the type bar, a connection between the key lever and said means, said connection being located between the ends of said means, a rack and pinion connection between the type bar and said means,
the pivot of the type bar and the pivot of said means being in substantial horizontal alignment with each other.
2. In a typewriter type bar actuating mech anism the combination of a key lever, a pivoted type bar and pivoted means for actuating the type bar, the key lever being slidably connected to said means, said type bar and means being pivoted at their ends and said means and the type bar being extended in opposite directions from their pivots, with said pivots in substantial horizontal allgnment with each other the pivoted means for actuating the type bar having means for engaging and actuating a ribbon shift mecha pivots, with said pivots in substantial horizontal alignment with each other, and having a rack and pinion connection between them.
4. In a typewriter type bar actuating mechanism the combination of a key lever, a pivoted type bar and pivoted member for actuating the type bar, the key lever beln directly and slidably connected with sai member, said type bar and member being pivoted at their ends and said members an the type bar being extended in opposite directions from their pivots, and having a rack and pinion connection between them, sa1d connection being formed between the free end of one and the pivoted end of the other.

6. In a typewriter type bar actuating mechanism the combination of a key lever, a pivoted type bar and a lever for actuating the type bar, the pivot of the type bar and said second mentioned lever being arranged in substantial horizontal alignment with .each other, said type bar and second mentioned lever being extended in 0p- 7 posite directions from their pivots, a connection provided between the free end of the lever for actuating the type bar and the pivoted end of said type bar whereby the type bar is actuated upon the actuation of the key lever, said key lever having an integral arm provided with a projection which engages said second mentioned lever and provides a means for releasably locking the key lever to said second mentioned lever and provides a 5 rolling contact therewith.
7. In a typewriter type bar actuating mechanism, the. combination of a horizontally arranged key lever, a type bar and a horizontally arranged pivoted bar located between the key lever and type bar operable upon the actuation of the key lever to actuate the type bar, a ribbon shift mechanism, and a carriage escapement mechanism each having portions located between the key lever and the pivoted bar, said pivoted bar having means for engaging said portions of the ribbon shift and carriage escapement mechanism to actuate the ribbon shift mechanism and said carriage escapement mechanism upon the actuation of MAX GARBELL.
