Abstract

Opening by tearing. - The tops of hermetically-sealed cans for preserved foods and other perishable articles are soldered to the can by an easily disruptible solder and provided with rip members by which the cans can be readily opened without the use of any can-opening appliance. A suitable solder has the composition lead 60 per cent, tin 20 per cent, and bismuth 20 per cent. Fig. 1 shows one form in which the top B is soldered to the can A along the line D, a tab C being attached to the part B to facilitate its removal. In another form the solder is applied over a wire which surrounds the entire line of junction of the body and top at the top edge of the can and terminates in a finger ring, and in a third form a thin strip of metal is employed as the medium for joining the top and body of the can and a line of solder is used on both sides of this strip. One end of the strip is left free to facilitate removal. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 2324/81, 2754/96, 7434/01, and 3505/09.
