Abstract

Engraving.-The machine described in the parent Specification is driven by an electric motor 1, the rotation of which is reversed at the end of each stroke of the cutting-tool, a quick return being provided for the idle stroke. The motor shaft carries small and large pulleys 2, 3, which drive pulleys 6, 7 by means of belts 4, 5. Within the pulleys 6, 7 are ratchets of opposite hand whereby, a shaft 10 is rotated in one direction or the other and at different speeds according to the direction of rotation of the motor. The shaft 10, by means of a worm and wheel 12, rotates a screw 13 to reciprocate a nut 14 on a frame 15 carrying stops 16 adapted to engage a pivoted arm 18, on top of which is a table 20 supporting a rolling weight 19 whereby the arm 18 is thrown over. A rod 21 connected to the arm 18 thereupon reverses the motor through a rack 24, pinion 25, and commutator arrangement 26. The stops 16 are adjustably fixed in slots 17 so that the stroke may be altered. The weight 19 also operates a switch to put the engraving- tool out of action during the inoperative stroke.
