Abstract

264,589. Hall & Co., Ltd., W., and King, G. B. Oct. 21, 1925. Wire, pointing; spindle-mountings.-In a machine for pointing wire in which the wires are fed between a saddle and a rotating feed wheel which rotates the wires and rolls them across the saddle, the ends of the wires passing across the hollow periphery of a grinding-wheel, the saddle and feed wheel are mounted on a table which is angularly adjustable about three axes to give adjustments for length of point, shape of point, and unequal wear of the wheel; the wheel also is adjustable for even wear and to press it against the wires. The saddle 11 is carried by a table 1 carried by part circular guideways 4 on a platform 2, and is adjustable about an axis 12 passing through a point 5 on the grinding-wheel 6 by a screw 46 rotated by a hand wheel 48 and adapted to move levers 43 connected by links 42 to the table; this adjustment is for the shape of the point. The platform 2 is carried by brackets 7 having part circular guides 8 movable in a cradle 9 about an axis 13 in the plane of the table and intersecting the axis 12; the platform is adjustable by a screw 49. This adjustment is for the length of the point. The cradle 9 has part circular portions 14 engaging supports 15 and is adjustable by a screw 25 about an axis 16 passing through one edge of the periphery of the grinding-wheel 6; this adjustment is to compensate for unequal wear of the wheel. The feed wheel 10, Fig. 7, is in two parts having rubber peripheries, one part having a renewable metal flange 40 to support the wire points during grinding. The wheel 10 is carried by a spindle 28 removably supported in bearings 29, one of which carries an adjustable spigot 31 engaging a ball bearing 32 in the end of the spindle, and the other bearing having a releasable cap and being mounted for vertical adjustment on posts 36, 37 to allow of adjustment for different sizes of wire. The grinding-wheel is carried by a shaft 17 in bearings 59 slidable vertically and moved by supports 69, which are adjustable by screws 68 movable, through gearing 64, 67 by a shaft 63. The bearings 59 are adjustable relatively to the supports 69 by means of cams 70 operated through levers 71 and links 72 by a lever 91 carried by a shalt 94. The grinding-wheel is driven from a main shaft 82 by a belt 74 acted upon by a jockey pulley 75 pressed inwardly by a weighted lever or by a spring, and the feed wheel is driven from the shaft 82 by a belt and a shaft 78, a clutch being interposed, and operated by a lever 92 moved upon movement of the lever 91 so that the feed wheel is rotating before the grinding-wheel is lifted into contact with the work; a trigger mechanism may be employed to ensure this. The belt 83 driving the feed wheel passes around jockey pulleys 84, 86 and drives the wheel through worm gearing 88 and a friction clutch 89, whereby the drive can slip if the wires wedge &c. The adjustments may be applied to the grinding-wheel instead of to the saddle; instead of mounting the table 1 upon a platform, the platform may be omitted and the brackets secured beneath the table, the cradle having a flange &c. to allow of mounting for shape adjustment. Specification 264,590 is referred to.
