T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY-E. Rmroor, a citizen of Great Britain, residing at Sheepshead Bay, in the county of Brooklyn and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Attachment for Grinding Machines,of which the following is a specification.
This invention. relates to an attachment for grinding machines for grinding radial or partly spherical objects and similar work which cannot ordinarily be performed on aplane or universal;- grinding machine and 1s constructed so as to be readily attached to any plane or universal grinding machine.
A defect in the process now. commonly in I use for grinding radial or semi-spherical obon the grinding wheel and I accomplish this by a combined rotary and linear motion of the object being ground across the face of a relative wide surface of the grinding wheel.
A still further object of the invention is to generally improveupon attachments of this character by providing a device which will be of extremely simple, durable and inexpensive in construction,one which will be eflicient and reliable inoperation and well adapted to the purpose for which it is'designed. .1
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the appended claims.

The attachment consists generally of the head 5 mounted on a compound slide 6 which in turn is carried on arotary table 7.

In order to move the carriage 8 backward and forward across the face of an emory wheel motion is imparted thereto by means of the lever 25 which is pivoted to the bracket 26 by means of a pin-27 and is con- 'nected intermediate its ends to the knuckle joint 28 ,to which attached the connecting rod 29. This clutch 33 is slidably mounted on the shaft 31 and is keyed thereto and is provided with an annular groove 3l for receiving rollers which are carried upon theends of the forked portion 35 of the lever 36. This lever. 36 is pivotally mounted in the bracket 37 and is provided with the locking spring 38 which fits a notch provided in the opening 39 so that this lever may be either held in a raised or. lowered position thus retaining the clutch 33 in an operative or inoperative position as will be described- It. willgbe noted that the'pinion 32 is serrated onits bottom as is shown at 40 and likewise the upper portion of the clutch 33 so that'when the serrated portions are in engagement with each other rotarymotion which is imparted to the pinion 32inamanner to 'be hereinafter described will also'be imparted to the clutch 33 and therefore to the shaft 31.

ripheral teeth 42 which engage the rack bar 43 carried by the frame 9. Thus when the carriage 8 is forced backward and forward through the lever 25 the pinion 32 will also be moved backward and forwardly thus causing the shaft 31 to be rotated.
At the bottom of the shaft 31 the threads 45 are provided so that the locking nut 46 may be screwed thereon for holding this shaft in its proper position. When the pinion 32 and clutch 38 are in engagement a combined linear and rotary motion of the object being ground is obtained. When the pinion and clutch are not in engagement the pinion revolves loosely on the shaft thus eliminating the rotary movement of the compound slide 6 since the rotary table is fixedly attached to the shaft 31 as is clearly shown in Figures 1 and 5 of the drawing resulting in a backward and forward movement of the object being ground across the face of the grinding wheel.
The upper portion of the carriage 8 is sector-shape as shown in Figure 2 the vertical face of the sector 47 being provided with a groove 48 as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 6 of the drawing so as to form a roller track and it will be noted that the upper face of the sector is graduated in degrees.
Attached to the rotary table 7 is a bracket 49 carrying two rollers 50 which run in the groove track 48 and thus form a roller bearing or support for the rotary table 7 A binding screw 51 is carried in the bracket l?) so as to fasten the rotary table in any desired position upon the sector 47. At 52 are illustrated movable stops which are clamped by the binding screws 53 in any desired position on the carriage sector 47 to limit the movement of the rotary table 7.
A dovetailed slide groove 54 is provided in the uppper portion of the rotary table 7 for receiving the dove-tailed portion 55 of the compound slide 6 so that this slide may be adjusted in relation to the rotary table 7 by means of the graduated adjusting screw 56. By referring to Figure 6 of the drawing it will also be seen that the head 5 is provided with the dove-tailed tongue 57 which is slidably mounted in a clove tailed groove provided in the upper portion of the compound slide 6 so that this head may be ad justed in relation thereto by means of the graduated adjusting screws 58.
The head or chuck 5 is provided with a bore so as to form a bearing for the rotatable driving head 59 which will carry a draw in chuck so as to be tightened by the screw 60. A driving pulley 61 is provided for rotating the driving head 59 by means of a belt which will be passed thereover. This head 5 is. detachable and can be replaced by a vise or fixed disk for holding rectangular or fiat objects in a manner well known in the art.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood without a more ex tended explanation. As numerous changes in form, proportion, and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of this invention I do not wish to be limited to the construction herein shown and described other than as claimed.
Having thus described by invention what I claim as new is 1. In a device of the class described, a frame, a carriage slidable on said frame, means for slidably operating said carriage on said frame, a shaft rotatably carried by said carriage, a table attached to said shaft so as to be rotatable on said carriage, adjustable means carried by said table for hold ing the object to be ground, a sector carried on the upper portion of said carriage, a groove provided in the vertical outer side of said sector, adjustable stops carried on said sector so as to limit the movement of said table, a bracket carried on said table, rollers provided in said bracket so as to ride in said groove in the sector, and means carried by said bracket for locking said table at any desired position on said sector.
2. In a device of the class described, a frame, a carriage slidably mounted on said frame, means for sliding said carriage on said frame, a rotatable shaft carried by said carriage, a pinion on said shaft, a rack on said frame adapted to mesh with said pinion, said pinion provided with a serrated lower face, a clutch keyed to and slidably mounted on shaft and provided with a serr rated upper face so as to engage the serrated face of said pinion, means for sliding said clutch in and out of engagement with said pinion, a rotatable table carried on said carriage and fixedly attached to said shaft, and means provided on said table for holding the object to be ground.
