A machine for lacquering sheet metal or other plates or the like has a transverse slide on which is located a head with which is combined a grinding wheel, means being provided for rotating the wheel and for traversing the head and wheel across the slide for grinding the lacquering roller of the machine in situ. The lacquering roller C is mounted in bearings A secured to the machine frame B. A transverse slide 3 having V-guides is secured to brackets 2 attached by bolts 1 to the frame B. On the slide is a head 7, 8; the part 7 incorporates a nut 9 meshing with a screw shaft 4 supported in the slide 9 by antifriction thrust bearings 5 and rotatable by a detachable handle 6. The part 8 is vertically adjustable on V-guides of the part 7 by a screw 17, having a knurled head 18, engaging a nut 19 the shank of which is anchored to the part 8 by a nut 20. A bracket 10 pivotally supported on the upper part of the member 8 supports an electric motor 11 which drives, through V-belt 16, grinding wheel 15 carried by a depending arm 13 of the part 8. The driving belt 16 is tensioned by operating a bolt 21 which tilts the bracket 10 about the pivot pin 22. The electric motor may be dispensed with and the grinding wheel driven by a flexible shaft. The head may be traversed from any convenient going - part of the lacquering machine through gears, or sprockets and chains. The grinding wheel may be partially enclosed in a head from which a duct leads to a fan for extracting dust.
