Abstract
282,651. Johnson, A. J. Dec 23, 1926, [Convention date]. Saxophones. - A saxophone is provided with a third octave hole in addition to the two ordinarily provided, for the purpose of clarifying the tone of the middle D of the key of the instrument and all notes below it. Preferably, also, operating connections are provided for controlling the three octave holes together. As shown, the saxophone has as usual an upper octave hole 4 the pad 5 of which is controlled by a link 6, arm 111, upper rock shaft 11, arm 10, rock shaft 8 and key 7, and a second octave hole, 13 and pad 14 controlled by rock shaft 16, arm 17, Fig. 7, arm 183, rock shafts 18 and 181, and key 182. The arm 183 has a lug 185 which acts on the arm 17 to open the octave hole. 13 and a lug 184 which at the same time acts on the rock shaft 11 to close the upper octave hole 4. The upper and middle holes are controlled in connection with the upper and middle D's of the key. The third octave hole 19 and its pad 20, which is located adjacent the higher D key, is controlled by a rock shaft 22, arm 23, arm 25, rock shaft 24, and lower D operating-key 33, Fig. 1. The arm 25 acts on a lug 231 of the arm 23 to open the pad 20, a second lug 232 at the same time acting on a lug 171: of the arm 17 to open the middle octave hole 13, the arm 17 again, by the connections described, acting to close the highest octave hole 4. The three octave holes are respectively controlled in connection with the playing of the higher, middle, and lower D's of the key, and by the connections described opening of the middle hole closes the upper hole, and opening of the lower hole opens the middle hole and closes the upper hole. Simple direct key control might be provided for the octave holes.
