Abstract
264,180. Potter, C. E. Jan. 9, 1926, [Convention date]. Clarinets. - To correct the sharpness of certain lower register notes, the holes 1, 2, 3 under the fingers of the right hand are made smaller than usual, and additional holes 4, 5, 6 are opened in playing certain upper register notes to correct the flatness thereof. The tampions 7, 8, 9 of the (additional holes are mounted loosely on a shaft 11 and have springs tending to open them. They are normally held closed by another spring acting on the shaft 11 which engages the tampions by means of lugs. The tampions 7, 8, 9 are allowed open simultaneously on operation of the upper register key 10, which by a lever 30 lifts an arm 25 mounted on a shaft 22 carrying at its other end an arm 26 which is similarly lifted and engages under a projection 28 on the shaft 11. Closure of any one of the holes 1, 2, 3 in playing an upper register note however closes the corresponding tampion 7, 8 or 9 of the additional holes. The rings 31, 32, 33 of the holes 1, 2. 3 are mornted loosely on their shaft 35 and have springs tending to hold them away from the body. On depression of a ring 31, 32 or 33 an arm 47, 48 or 49, lifts an arm 50, 51 or 52 on tampion 7, 8 or 9 to close the latter. Tampion 34 of the hole emitting C#, G#, which tampion is fixed on the shaft 35, is closed by any one of the rings 31, 32, 33 'by means of lugs. The hole for producing B, F#, is moved to the other side of the shaft 35 to avoid interference with the tampions 7, 8, 9. The fingering of the whole instrument is unaffected.
