Abstract
214,348. Child, G. H. Jan. 25, 1923. Clarinets. - Three holes near the mouthpiece giving A @, A @, and B @, closed when all fingers are off, are respectively allowed to open on placing the fingers of the right hand (3R, 2R and 1R) on their rings or plates provided neither 1L nor2L is on its ring. Also finger 1R effects closure of the low F #, C # cup, and the keys of C # G #, and A @ E @ are interconnected. The three cups 20, 21, 22 lightly sprung to open are held closed with all fingers off by more strongly sprung levers 23, 24, 25. Cup 20 yielding A p is allowed to open by placing 3R on ring 28, or as an alternative by placing 1R on plate 44, ring 28 and plate 44 being both mounted on a rod 39 and thus raising lever 23. Cup 21 yielding A @ is allowed to open by placing 2R on ring 27 mounted on a rod 40, thus raising lever 24, which by a clutch 30 also raises lever 23 and permits the A @ cup 20 to open to improve the A @. Cup 22 yielding B @ is allowed to open by placing 1R. on a plate 26 mounted on a rod 41, thus raising lever 25, while a tongue 29 causes the ring 27 to be actuated and cups 21, 20 to be opened to improve the B @. The three cups 20, 21, 22 are however positively held closed by arms 33, 32, 31 on a rod 34, actuated by placing either 1L or 2L on its ring, through clutches 35, 36. Since the speaker key 11 is not used for B @, its hole may be made smaller and nearer the mouthpiece. Cups 38, 37 actuated by keys 9. 10 operated by 1L (or according to the Provisional Specification by 2L and 1L) are used chiefly for shaking from B p to B and C. The usual Boehm fingerings for F @, F, and E p are employed; key 8 is used chiefly for shaking from F to F @, and cup 54 may be opened by either key 7 or key 7b. Cup 42 yielding E @ is closed by an arm on rod 40 when plate 26 or ring 27 is pressed, but not on pressing plate 44 or ring 28. Cup 50 yielding C # G #is allowed to open on depressing the more strongly sprung key 6, but is closed again through a clutch 51 when cup 48 of C, G is closed either by 1R on plates 44 or 26 or by 2R through an arm 49, or by 3R. The key 6 of C # G # also opens the cup 53 of the hole emitting A @ E @, while the key 4 of the latter conversely operates the key 6, through a rod 52. Key 5 is the usual Boehm key used chiefly for shaking from B @ F to B F # The three cups 45<a>, 45, and 47 yielding G D, F # C #, and F C are open with all fingers off. Key 2 gives F # C # by closing cup 45<a>, and if, in addition, 1R be placed on plate 26, F C is given by closure of cup 45 by an arm 55 on rod 41. On members of the clarinet family descending to low C G, three of the four extra holes may be closed by usual additional keys for 4L and 4R, while the remaining one, emitting C # G #, is closed by an arm, similar to the arm 55, on an extension of the rod 41. Key 1 closes cup 47 and, by means of the clutches 46a, 46, the cups 45a, 45, to give low E B.
