Abstract
283,924. Evette, M. Jan. 20, 1927, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Saxophones &c. - Relies to improvements in saxophones and like instruments. An octave-hole having a central tube projecting into the body and uncovered by the L thumb; also an upper F# aperture closed by a cup from a key operated by L4, are arranged at the left-hand side of the upper part of the body (Fig. 4, not shown). An aperture for upper G is provided in the overlapping parts of the mouthpiece and body, on the righthand side, the cup being opened by a key for R1, which simultaneously opens the cup of upper E (Figs. 1 to 3, not shown). A lower C# hole 27, Fig. 6, normally open, is closed by a lug 28 on the normally open C# cup 24 when the latter is closed by L4 key 29. The lower C# holes 27 may independently be closed by a key 22, Fig. 5, operating arms 32, 30, 29<6>, 27<1>. Depression of key 22 also depresses key 20 by a lug 33, which by a bridge 37 closes the normally open cup 19 of lower D. Another key 21, in alignment with the keys 20, 22, directly opens the normally closed lower E# hole 21<3>. The C cup 50, Fig. 7, normally open, on depression, lifts an arm 48, thus allowing a spring 45<1> to close the B# hole 44. With the C cup 50 depressed however, cup 44 may be raised by key 54 acting under a lug 55 thereon. The D cup 56, which has a lifting spring, is held normally closed by an arm 64, which arm may be raised by a key 66 (or by an arm 98 from the F# cup) to allow cup 56 to open, simultaneously closing C# cup 68. The D cup 56 being open, can be closed (the C# cup 63 remaining closed) by depressing either the C cup 50 or the B# key 62, these acting by arms under the tail of the D-cup lever. The octave note of any hole may be obtained by providing the hole with two cups, the underneath cup having a small central hole. Raising both cups yields the normal note; raising the upper cup only yields the uctave. In another construction (Figs. 10, 10' not shown), closure of any one of the (alternate) cups E#, F, G, A, B, C# closes those above it. Further, F is closed when E is closed; closing F# closes G; a key closes simultaneously the A cup and a G# cup to sound G; and another G# cup, normally open, is closed by any of the cups F#, F, E, E#, or on removing finger L4 from a key connected to the cup through a clutch.
