Channels in shafts.-In a turbine in which the steam is admitted through a bore in the shaft g, two tubular pipes i, k are inserted in the bore to form two annular spaces n, q surrounding the steam passage e ; the inner annular space n is filled with a heat insulating mass such as kieselguhr while the outer annular space q is cooled by circulation of lubricating oil under pressure. The oil enters and leaves the annular space q by ducts o, p which may be arranged to assist the circulation, the inlet duct o scooping and the outlet duct p projecting the oil; the shaft may be of greater diameter at the oil outlet point.
